Max-sized carry on for international trips. Best for: More comfort, organization, and weather-resistance. Mid-sized carry on for weekend trips. Suitcases aren't made for city travel. Try dragging a suitcase with cheap plastic wheels over cobblestone streets and up a few flights of stairs to your Airbnb. Suitcases are the opposite of hands-free travel. The tall, skinny packs for "backpackers" aren't much better. Those giant, cylindrical bags are made for hiking, not for traveling. They're too big to be carried onto a plane and too disorganized when you're on the move. You have to dump everything out to find what you need, then repack your whole bag. You can't spend your trip packing and unpacking every single day.
The Tortuga Outbreaker really expands with the amount of stuff you pack.

Disclaimer: We take the measurements of the bag provided by the manufacturer and compare them to the allowance listed on airline websites. This should be used as a guideline rather than a rule. Bags can change size as you pack them out, and every airline's interpretation of compliance is different. Just because a bag is listed as carry-on compliant here doesn't mean that the airline will interpret it that way.

Because the Outbreaker is so organized, you have a lot of options for packing this bag. This is a little confusing until you learn which section is which. The Outbreaker backpack debuted a few years ago as one of the first backpacks dedicated to travel. I think this bag would also be good for some heavy loads because of the robust harness system and hip belts if you choose to use them. Simon prefers to use an electronics cube in the large main compartment instead. That lower pocket on the front exterior is designed to be 3-D and have depth, and it is close. Anna Popp. Just because a bag is listed as carry-on compliant here doesn't mean that the airline will interpret it that way. I was also able to squeeze in my Roost laptop stand. Which is why I wish Tortuga made a 40L instead of a 45L. Hiking packs set the standard for comfort because they're meant to carry tens of pounds for an entire day of hiking. Sailcloth is a bit crinkly, so you're gonna hear it. The Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L is our pick for the best carry-on backpack.

Amazing materials and brilliant organization make it worth the price, but I cannot emphasize just how comfortable it is. Tortuga quality is incredible — the material is going to last forever. But again, whatever you put in here will affect the physics of what you can put in the front. These work well for flatter items.
