The long-awaited Sony A7R V is finally here, and it's great. It uses the same 61MP sensor as its predecessor but includes a more processing power, a dedicated AI processing unit, new autofocus system, new IBIS and much more. There's so much to like about the A7R V, and it remains one of the best cameras on the market. However, does it offer enough to warrant upgrading from the A7R IV? Read on to find out.

It was a wonderful opportunity to find out if the autofocus is as good as advertised. Looking at the camera in a critical way makes me wonder: which photographer is the camera intended for? It has been three years since the Sony a7R IV was announced, so it was time for an upgrade. Everything else is completely new. The latest Bionz processor allows not only a small increase in dynamic range, but also an enhanced AI-based autofocus system that seems to be the main selling point. Sony has come a long way since the first Alpha series cameras. With the Sony A1, the design finally became more mature. Ergonomics have become better, the quality of buttons has increased, and the menu is redesigned. After the Sony a1 , the Sony a7 IV also got a better design and bulkier body. To be honest, it was the first Sony that I enjoyed. The new Sony a7R V has almost the same design. The buttons have a good feel and a clear pressure point. The joystick works well, and the dials have a good grip. The camera is the right size for my hands, allowing a firm grip.

The Sony A7 IV is the best hybrid mirrorless camera you can buy right now. A truly modern all-rounder that largely justifies its price tag, it packs class-leading autofocus, impressive image quality and powerful video features into one versatile body. Dedicated street or sports photographers should look elsewhere, and it isn't the fastest shooter in its class. But for everyone else, the A7 IV is a rock-solid all-rounder with few glaring weaknesses. It might be the only camera you ever need. Find out more about how we test.

This was quite disappointing. The old exposure compensation dial is now a blank control dial. Perhaps the most important selling point is the artificial intelligence autofocus. The second screen is the electronic viewfinder. The high-resolution performance is second to none. Again, I would expect AI-driven autofocus to be able to figure this out. Autofocus in both cameras is excellent. The A7R V gets a new 4-way tilting touchscreen. Unfortunately, there is no way to check if the battery has a full charge. A bit like Coen brothers movies, Sony cameras can be good and then great, alternating between the two. I don't like needing to deal with constantly tweaking the white balance setting as lighting conditions change, and since I always shoot raw, I'm not concerned with white balance settings.
