Shockwave was a member of the scientist caste in the industrial city of Kaon. In a reversal of the usual order, he was swayed by the ambitions of the former mining caste member turned gladiator Megatron. Serving as Megatron's "pet mad scientist" and second-in-command , he saw to the fighter's armament during his rise to prominence, all the while fantasizing on the prospect of mass producing such warriors. Thankfully, Megatron's more practical nature reined in Shockwave as the movement which became the Decepticons finally moved out of the shadows. Shockwave naturally only serves his one true master: logic. He's willing to ignore petty squabbles and jabs at him, and will only do what he finds logical. Megatron is pleased by his dedication and his competence stemming from it, starkly contrasting with the egotistical and gloating Starscream.

Shockwave has been referred to as "a computer on legs. Logic rules Shockwave's thought processes and is the source of his every inspiration. He sees emotion as a weakness and a distraction. His cold and calculating modus operandi is supported by his frightening and exceptionally powerful form. Shockwave is possibly even more powerful than Megatron. Perhaps logic may one day dictate that the time to replace Megatron's flawed, emotion-fueled rule is at hand. After all, the only logical choice for Decepticon leader would be Shockwave himself. When he is an Action Master , he is partnered with Fistfight. An adherent of his twisted version of logic, Shockwave was Military Commander of the Decepticons, conceiving the original plan to assault the Ark. However, when the Ark crashed onto Earth , Shockwave followed in the Decepticon ship , but the planet's magnetic fields caused that ship to crash in the Savage Land. There, he was confronted by the Dinobots and their battle brought them to a tar pit that held them in stasis for millions of years. When Shockwave was reawakened in , he immediately set out to disable the Autobots and take Decepticon leadership away from Megatron. Using Earth's infrastructure and resources, Shockwave sought to create powerful Decepticon soldiers, but was foiled by Optimus Prime hiding the life-giving Creation Matrix in the human boy Buster Witwicky. At the end of this caper, Shockwave ended up in a swamp.

Shockwave is the best Decepticon scientist with deadly efficiency and one of the three tertiary antagonists of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. He was also one of the deadliest Decepticon assassins that Megatron has at his disposal. He was said by some to be the only Decepticon who could defeat Megatron in combat. Shockwave is a killing machine like few others, one of the very few who could rival Megatron, and quite popular amongst the Decepticons. In a way, some respect him enough to willingly work with him, while others idolize him to the point of avenging his death. Nevertheless, Shockwave is ready and willing to destroy whichever Autobots dare stand in his way with his arm-mounted AstroMag Cannon.
Shockwave is a covert agent in service to Megatron. This size-changing master of disguise has infiltrated the Autobot security apparatus at the highest level: his cover persona is Longarm Prime , head of Cybertron Intelligence , reporting directly to Ultra Magnus himself. The undercover Decepticon is the perfect agent to pull this off, as he's able to change his voice, his appearance, and even his energy signature. This puts Shockwave in the perfect position to undermine and mislead the Autobots while feeding strategic information to his true master. To establish his credibility, "Longarm" attended the Autobot boot camp alongside Bumblebee and Bulkhead. Over the years, he worked his way up the Autobot hierarchy until finally he was promoted to be the very head of the Intelligence Division itself! The Age of Wrath ceased publication before the story could conclude. Joe team were able to reactivate the gate, allowing the newly created Dinobots to return to Cybertron. He was singlehandedly ha responsible for menacing the remaining Autobot resistance movements on Cybertron, and when Megatron was reactivated in , assisted in the development of Space Bridge technology. However the Driller was killed by Optimus Prime using his flight gear, and Shockwave, enraged by the death of his pet, opened fire on Optimus, briefly disabling him and taking him out of the fight. Though Shockwave advocated caution, especially given that Gozer's power was beyond his sensors' ability to categorize, Starscream fired his null-ray at the entity who reflected its power back at the Decepticons.
