The tank howitzer version was accepted for service use, but the infantry version was not. The howitzer was built up from a section of a QF 3. In most regiments, the 95 mm-armed tanks were issued to regimental or squadron HQ troops at the rate of two vehicles per HQ. The only variant of the Centaur tank a Cromwell tank with a less powerful engine to see action was the 95 mm-armed Mark IV. The Ordnance QF mm infantry howitzer was a version built as a conventional towed artillery piece. Perhaps in response to the success of the German sIG 33 , a proposal was circulated in the summer of by the British Army for an infantry howitzer for direct fire against concrete structures, like pillboxes. The infantry howitzer version was similar to the tank howitzer, except that it lacked the barrel counterweight and was placed on a box-trail carriage and given a gun shield.

It was obtained by boring out the Ordnance QF 6-pounder "6 pdr" 57 mm anti-tank gun to 75 mm, to give better performance against infantry targets in a similar fashion to the 75 mm M3 gun fitted to the American Sherman tank. The QF came from "quick-firing" , referring to the use of ammunition where the shell has a fixed cartridge. Prior to the introduction of the ROQF 75 mm, British tanks had been equipped with first the QF 2-pounder 40 mm and then the larger 6-pounder 57 mm. These guns were designed to fire armour-piercing shot , small high-velocity solid rounds that were effective against tanks but did little damage to groups of infantry or soft targets like trucks. The decision to equip British tanks with a gun capable of firing HE shells at soft targets was taken by the War Office. A HE shell for the 6-pounder was in production by the start of the Tunisia Campaign and available in large numbers in the Italian Campaign. The round lacked sufficient explosive power, but the power of the US 75 mm HE round used in the 75 mm M3 was found to be markedly superior and a number of Churchills used in Italy had guns scavenged from Sherman tanks and fitted to their turrets to give the Churchill NA75 NA coming from "North Africa" where the conversions were carried out.

Howitzers are one of two primary types of field artillery. Historically, howitzers fired a heavy shell in a high-trajectory from a relatively short barrel and their range was limited but they were slightly more mobile than similar size field guns. Since the end of World War II , howitzers have gained longer barrels and hence increased range to become gun-howitzers. Contents move to sidebar hide. Article Talk. Read Edit View history.

With no way to exclude light, my dimmer did not work very well and literally had to hold a paper to window to block out early morning sun. This is not a good seat. Worse still, when my seat was upright and the passenger in front of me reclined, the back of his seat was practically meeting my chin, making it impossible to comfortably eat during meal times. There is no limited recline on these last row seats. For me the plus was the legroom. The pluses: it provides a stable flying experience and it is relatively quiet. Seat 46 K is a standard Economy Class seat with additional legroom, however, the Exit Door protrusion and the proximity to the lavatories may be bothersome. Seat 40 H is a standard Economy Class seat with additional legroom, however, the position of the bassinet may be bothersome. Even so, the slightly narrower seat felt a little cramped. Qantas Seat Maps Boeing You also have to navigate your way through either Business Class, or the Coach cabin to access the nearest toilet. Fantastic seat! Speaking of the aisle, he was bumped continuously during the flight, even though he was within the confines of my seat. Biggest negatives of this seat are 1 it's right behind the toilet wall and the flush is extremely loud, and 2 the light from the rear galley is very bright and fully illuminates at least the last 4 rows. Seat 10 E is a standard Business Class seat, however, the proximity to the lavatories and galleys, and position of the bassinet may be bothersome. Seat 2 F is a standard Business Class seat, however, the proximity to the lavatory and galley, and position of the bassinet may be bothersome. These are the worst Prem.
