In the past, Mihawk was known as the "Marine Hunter" [9] and had a reputation for being the rival of Shanks , one of the Four Emperors. His place of residence was Kuraigana Island , [5] on which he served during the two-year timeskip as Roronoa Zoro 's master in his swordsmanship training. Due to his status and title, Mihawk is viewed by Zoro as the ultimate obstacle to achieve his dream of becoming the world's strongest swordsman himself. Mihawk can be considered a supporting antagonist of the Baratie Arc and one of the major antagonists in the Marineford Arc , where he took part in the Summit War of Marineford on the side of the Marines , along with most of the other Warlords of the Sea. Mihawk is a tall, lean, and muscular man with black hair, a short beard, mustache and sideburns that point upwards. His nickname comes from his strangely colored red eyes yellow in the anime , which resemble a hawk's eyes.

All think that Mihawk will get killed by Shiliew, who will inturn be killed by Zoro as vengeance. But do you all remember that after the battle at Baratie, Mihawk gave his word to Zoro, that he will hold the title of World's strongest swordsman and remain in his prime strength and wait for Zoro to come back and challenge him again. He gave his word. And Mihawk strikes me as someone who'd keep his word at any cost. So don't you think Mihawk can be dethroned by Zoro and Zoro only? There are plenty of times promises have been broken in this series and while I would tend to agree that Mihawk is a somewhat more honorable person. Its not really his choice to lose. If Shillew has the diamond fruit and Mihawk can't cut him, as seen during the war, then Mihawk will lose. There is no way around it. An option that would make Mihawk keep his word is that Zoro bests him and then he dies. At which point Zoro would have to avenge his mentor for honors sake. I think this is rather unlikely though cause it kinda makes Zoro the favorite to win. The challenge of cutting diamond may off set that though. Basically, the relationship between Mihawk and Zoro is that of a Master and Disciple

His haki is not as strong as Shanks. He is surprised to discover their new bounty since he does not anticipate on Luffy and Zoro's accomplishment under mihawk death a short time.
