Marmot is famous for the quality of its sustainably-sourced down fill. The company uses premium or fill down in most of its cold-weather down sleeping bags to minimise weight, maximise packability, and ensure you stay warm when thethermometer drops. On top of that, Marmot takes care to ensure its down sleeping bags are able to handle any weather conditions. The down fill is treated with Down Defender to protect against moisture, and every down bag is constructed with a water-resistant ripstop Pertex lining. The foot box is wide enough to allow you to spread your feet after a long day on the trail. At the same time, a uniquely designed hood wraps tightly around yourhead to eliminate heat loss and lull you to sleep.

I tested the new Marmot Col Degree sleeping bag in true expedition conditions over 35 days in the Alaska Range. My trip encompassed a personal climbing trip out to Mt. Huntington in pursuit of some technical objectives at lower elevations. This was as a volunteer for the Denali Rescue Volunteers program. These adventures culminated in the perfect trip to put the Marmot Col Degree sleeping bag through the wringer for over a month straight in an appropriate setting. It provided appropriate warmth with comfort not usually found in this category of sleeping bags. And the substantial roominess and feature set added to livability in expedition settings. For the first part of our trip, two friends and I flew into the east fork of the Tokositna Glacier.

Marmot is experimenting with adding a secondary zipper to several sleeping bag designs to allow new venting possibilities. The location of the secondary zipper on the side of the Marmot Helium 15 is one of the more perplexing of these experiments, causing us to downgrade an otherwise stellar sleeping bag. The Marmot Helium utilizes 20 ounces of FP down, a pretty sizeable amount for a 3-season backpacking sleeping bag. It receives a 10F lower limit temperature rating on the industry-standard EN test but Marmot markets the bag with a more conservative 15F rating. We think the conservative manufacturer rating is more accurate because this bag doesn't incorporate a neck baffle to trap heat inside the bag. Some folks may prefer the simplicity of this design but be aware that this allows considerably more heat to escape out the collar of the hood. This isn't an issue in most conditions but it becomes a problem in temps approaching the 15F rating. A size long Marmot Helium weighed in at 2.
