The Marvel Cinematic Universe or the MCU is a media franchise created by Marvel Studios and set primarily in a shared universe, with some installments also set in adjacent or branching realities. Starting with Iron Man , the franchise is comprised mainly of films independently made by Marvel Studios, that are primarily set within this same universe, much like Marvel has done with their comics. The franchise includes a series of short films, called Marvel One-Shots , launched with several films' Blu-ray releases starting with Thor and finishing with Thor: Ragnarok. Starting with Agents of S. Other contents include a series of tie-in comics and video games, released as promotional material to the films and series and therefore part of the franchise, even if some of them are set on these branching realities.

The films are based on characters that appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The franchise also includes television series , short films, digital series, and literature. The shared universe, much like the original Marvel Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters. Marvel Studios releases its films in groups called "Phases", with the first three phases collectively known as "The Infinity Saga" and the following three phases as "The Multiverse Saga". Marvel Television expanded the universe to network television with Agents of S. They also produced the digital series Agents of S. They also expanded to television specials in Phase Four, known as Marvel Studios Special Presentations , the first of which was Werewolf by Night The franchise has been commercially successful, becoming one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time, and generally received positive reviews. It has inspired other film and television studios to attempt similar shared universes and has also inspired several themed attractions, an art exhibit, television specials, literary material, multiple tie-in video games, and commercials. The other filmmakers aren't used to getting actors from other movies that other filmmakers have cast, certain plot lines that are connected or certain locations that are connected, but I think Primarily because we've always remained consistent saying that the movie that we are making comes first. All of the connective tissue, all of that stuff is fun and is going to be very important if you want it to be. If the fans want to look further and find connections, then they're there. There are a few big ones obviously, that hopefully the mainstream audience will [be] able to follow as well.

Gravik was the leader of the radical Skrull Resistance and Skrull General in the Skrull Council , who grew disillusioned and spiteful of Nick Fury for abandoning him after Fury went into exile. Replacing Talos as the newly appointed Skrull General, Gravik initiated the Secret Invasion , launching covert terrorist attacks and attempting to manipulate humanity to engage in self-destructive nuclear war. By selling his movement as a way to allow the Skrulls to inhabit Earth as their new home planet, he began a war with the ultimate goal of getting revenge on Nick Fury for hurting him as a boy. Intending to raise an army of Super-Skrulls, he sought the Harvest containing combatants' DNA from the Battle of Earth , although Gravik was killed by G'iah before he could fulfill his war. When he was young, Gravik's parents were killed during the Kree-Skrull War , but managed to escape behind enemy lines and piloted a ship on his own, which he used to go to Earth. Once arriving on Earth, Gravik was found and aided by Varra , who brought him to Talos ' sanctuary of the surviving Skrulls , who had been able to escape the Kree. Despite his grief, Gravik took comfort in believing that his parents had died well during the war. Gravik becoming embraced by Nick Fury.

Groot is a Flora colossus who was the prophesized hero of Drez-Lar and the accomplice of Rocket Raccoon. Together, the pair had traveled the galaxy picking up bounties until they met Star-Lord and Gamora just before the four of them were captured and put into the Kyln , where they also met Drax the Destroyer. There, they agreed to work together to escape and sell the Orb for a massive profit. However, when it was discovered that the Orb contained one of the Infinity Stones which was being sought out by Ronan the Accuser , Groot convinced his friends to risk everything to stop Ronan's diabolical plans.
