In the latest Research Assessment Exercise conducted by the UGC, Lingnan's research in humanities, business and social sciences was classified as "World Leading" 4 star and "Internationally Excellent" 3 star ; and some research disciplines under business and social sciences came 1st or 2nd among all public universities in terms of the percentage of "World Leading" research work. We have the longest established tradition among the local institutions of higher education. Our history can be dated back to , when our forerunner, the Christian College in China, was founded in Guangzhou, and to , when the institution, as Lingnan College, was re-established in Hong Kong. Both the MPhil and PhD programmes lead to in-depth study in specific research areas. To offer more diversified learning opportunities, especially for interdisciplinary research studies, Lingnan has been actively seeking collaborative opportunities with overseas universities. The University has been offering a number of full-time PhD programmes in collaboration with Mainland universities.
