ACWB executive director Liana Wheeldon said in an interview that the project will bring new life into downtown, support creative talent already in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, and make the region a more attractive place for people to settle. If you look at any community that has gone through an economic downturn or disasters, artists see how they can rebuild and help put that creative spark back into their city. The building has been empty since when Landmark Cinemas closed the building and opened a larger multiplex in Eagle Ridge. While local artists, musicians and other creative types have spaces to show off their art, the plan is to turn the Main Street building into a space where skilled and new artists can work called Arts Inc. The front of the building will be mostly glass and open to the public. The lobby will be a place for workshops and events. They include a culinary arts space and teaching kitchen; a visual arts studio for painting, drawing, sculpting and writing; a space for film, photography and multimedia production; and a room for theatre productions, rehearsals and film showings. The fifth room is a soundproof recording studio with space for practicing. Wheeldon says this has been a popular demand from local musicians and singers. ACWB already brings artists to rural communities, and the space will act as a place for rural and Indigenous artists to work. Wheeldon said there have been non-profit and for-profit organizations that have already asked about securing creative space in the building. Artists and arts organizations in Edmonton and Calgary have been curious about working with the centre, and ACWB has had preliminary conversations with municipal councillors in Athabasca about partnerships. Arts Inc. ACWB has applied for grants and is in discussions with other potential funders for the centre.
