I think that's quite a valuable skill to have although I do get that having the colours selected for you makes it easier. Unless the person requires you to color pick, or the ref is in dynamic shading which it never is , choosing a color that is similar to the ref shouldn't be hard as an artist. Everytime someone complains about this, I wonder how little learning you've done to not be able to choose colors. That's like the second thing you learn after how to draw a line. Oh no. It's shaded.
