I was walking along the rue de Rivoli, rain pouring, getting kouignettes paris. Kouign ettes? Mini kouign amanns? A smaller portion of heaven?

The truth? I cheat on New York quite often. I love to come and go. I love to visit the same spots often. And of all the places I tend to go, Paris has really been my main squeeze.

So it stands to reason that one of the most buttery, sinful and sensational cakes in France hails from this beautiful buttery region. The New York Times once dubbed it "the fattiest pastry in all Europe" - so naturally we're big fans. It may look like a strange name, but the Kouign-amann pronounced queen-a-mahn means "butter cake" in Breton. It's certainly an apt title. Now a Brittany classic, the Kouign-amann's exact history is debated. In Paris over years later, this particular pastry is a treasure which must be sought out - the kouign-amann is by no means a common feature in the windows of Paris boulangeries! Until quite recently if you wanted to experience a true kouign-amann you would have had a journey to Brittany on your hands - hands which would soon be covered in butter and sugar, making the adventure wholly worthwhile. But no longer! Brittany has finally arrived in Paris in the form of brilliantly executed kouign-amann and kouignettes - smaller versions of the traditionally large circular cakes which will have your cholesterol levels breathing a sigh of relief.

When it comes to pastries, chocolates, and macarons , there are an endless number of shops to choose from in Paris. The location on Boulevard Saint-Germain is one of three Paris locations, but the original family-owned business was in Brittany. Maison Georges Larnicol is a Meilleur Ouvrier de France winner they make beautiful chocolate sculptures and they offer visitors a wonderful selection of chocolates, macarons, fudges, candies, and cakes. Soooo much chocolate …. In other words, lots of folding and waiting.

Everything from nature — or plain — to caramel, pistachio, chocolate, and almond. The store is self-serve, so visitors are invited to grab a pair of serving tongs and fill up their bags however they wish. M and I shared a bag of plain, pistachio, chocolate and almond kouignettes and pistachio was hands down my favorite.
