Best known for writing The Jewish War , he was born in Jerusalem —then part of the Roman province of Judea —to a father of priestly descent and a mother who claimed royal ancestry. He initially fought against the Roman Empire during the First Jewish—Roman War as general of the Jewish forces in Galilee , until surrendering in AD 67 to the Roman army led by military commander Vespasian after the six-week siege of Yodfat. Josephus claimed the Jewish messianic prophecies that initiated the First Jewish—Roman War made reference to Vespasian becoming Roman emperor. In response, Vespasian decided to keep Josephus as a slave and presumably interpreter. After Vespasian became emperor in AD 69, he granted Josephus his freedom , at which time Josephus assumed the Emperor's family name of Flavius.

As if they could procure them happiness, and security for what they possessed; and an assured enjoyment of a still greater good; which was that of the honour and glory they would thereby acquire for magnanimity. They also said that God would not otherwise be assisting to them, than upon their joining with one another in such counsels as might be successful, and for their own advantage: and this especially if they would set about great exploits; and not grow weary in executing the same. So men received what they said with pleasure: and this bold attempt proceeded to a great height. All sorts of misfortunes also sprang from these men; and the nation was infected with this doctrine to an incredible degree. One violent war came upon us after another: and we lost our friends, which used to alleviate our pains: there were also very great robberies, and murders of our principal men. This was done in pretence indeed, for the publick welfare; but in reality, from the hopes of gain to themselves.

Insomuch that they by thus coming to him, compensated the multitude of those that perished in the fight.

The second ten volumes continues the history of the Jewish people beyond the biblical text and up to the First Jewish—Roman War 66—73 CE.
