This quest begins by reading the book Ruminations on the Elder Scrolls. When the Dragonborn finds Septimus Signus's Outpost , the mad scholar living there asks for help opening the strange Dwemer box inside. To do so, Septimus must use an Elder Scroll which requires a lexicon to be transcribed. This transcription can only be done at a Dwemer Oculory located within the Tower of Mzark in Blackreach , and the only way to reach the tower is go through Alftand , then Blackreach. This is easily the longest and most fraught part of the quest as both Alftand and Blackreach are extensive and certainly not lacking in Falmer and other dangerous foes. Once inside the Tower of Mzark, the Lexicon must be placed in the receptacle, and the Oculory must be activated using the four buttons on the platform above the Oculory.
Once you reach level 14, a female Argonian named From-Deepest-Fathoms will appear near Riften Fishery , walking around in circles, manically talking to herself. When you approach her, she will tell you about a place called Avanchnzel and an item she refers to as "the Lexicon": "You. You must take the Lexicon. Free me of my burden. I cannot stand them. You must take them away, return them to Avanchnzel. You must take the Lexicon from me.

Far north of Winterhold , there is a small cave called Septimus Signus's Outpost. Inside, a strange Dwemer cube is being studied by Septimus Signus. He claims the "heart of a God," "heart of you and me," is located inside. He asks you to help him see through the cube. To do so, he plans to use the power of an Elder Scroll. However, he does not possess the knowledge to use the Elder Scroll. To help him, you must travel to the Dwemer ruin Alftand and charge the Lexicon. Be prepared: Alftand is an extensive Dwemer ruin occupied by Falmer and Dwemer constructs, including Centurions.
