The show is a mockumentary style series that follows a group of students at East High School as they put on a production of High School Musical. The series stars Joshua Bassett as Ricky, a former star basketball player who is trying to win back his ex-girlfriend Nini, played by Olivia Rodrigo, by auditioning for the musical. Matt Cornett plays E. J, Nini's new boyfriend who also auditions for the musical, causing tension between him and Ricky. Sofia Wylie plays Gina, a new student who also auditions for the musical and threatens to steal the spotlight from Nini. Larry Saperstein plays Big Red, Ricky's best friend and the stage manager for the musical. Julia Lester plays Ashlyn, a shy student who auditions for the musical and ends up being cast in a lead role. Dara Renee plays Kourtney, a sarcastic student who is also involved in the musical. Throughout the series, the students deal with conflicts both on and off stage. The show explores themes such as friendship, love, and identity. The characters also deal with personal issues such as family problems, identity struggles, and self-doubt.
