Its premise is a tantalizing one given the director's immense skill as a choreographer and visual stylist and deft hand with comedy. The son of a convicted thief assembles a team to exact revenge against the sinister tycoon who framed the father by stealing a set of invaluable diamonds, which requires that the avengers enter a dance competition. The execution of that premise is extremely erratic; there are few movies in living memory that ricochet between shockingly offensive comic business and utterly disarming hilarity as drastically as this one. It's that mercurial aspect to the comedy that causes hesitation before branding it outright as homophobic or racist. There are mean-spirited straight male gay panic gags side by side with awkward but clearly affectionate normalizing of gay desire. Almost the entire first half of the movie, until the intermission, is a bit of a disaster. The second half, featuring more dancing and the fruition of the heist plot, is a good deal more fun. But it's the dance sequences, featuring cortex-melting costume design and Farah Khan choreography—it's not her best work, but even a slightly off-her-game Farah Khan towers over mere mortals—go a long way toward making the whole enterprise worthwhile.

Chandramohan "Charlie" Sharma is a street fighter who has spent eight years plotting revenge on Charan Grover, the owner of Shalimar Securities, who was responsible for Charlie's father Manohar being convicted and imprisoned as a thief. He assembles a team that includes hard-of-hearing strongman and explosives expert Jagmohan "Jag" Prakash, seizure-prone safecracker Tehamton "Tammy" Irani, Jag's nephew and master hacker Rohan Singh, and Nandu Bhide, who looks identical to Grover's son Vikky. Jag and Tammy also resent Grover, who hired their father figure Manohar to build the impenetrable vault Shalimar, then stole his own diamonds and framed Manohar in an insurance fraud scheme. The key to Charlie's plan is to enter room 9C at the hotel, which is connected to the vault by an abandoned duct and sewer system. Since room 9C is reserved for teams participating in the World Dance Championship WDC , the group must become a world-class dance team on top of their heist preparations. After the group fails to learn from several dance instructors, Nandu introduces Charlie to Mohini, a Marathi bar dancer who is impressed by Charlie's fluency in English. Mohini agrees to teach the group to dance without knowing their true intentions, and grows close to Charlie.
