Living… a normal life in a normal town. Like everyone else in Bricksburg, Emmet is a creature of routine.

He is the one who is prophesied to save the universe with the Piece of Resistance from Lord Business who intends to use a powerful relic called the Kragle , dubbing him as "the Special". Emmet was just a normal construction worker in Bricksburg , living alone in an apartment with his potted plant Planty. He was caught off guard on his job by a hooded figure who was searching on the construction site. He went to try and follow the hooded figure who revealed themselves to be a lady, but ends up falling down a hole. This is where he discovered and touched the Piece of Resistance before experiencing a vision and passing out. He awakens in the custody of Bad Cop, President Business ' enforcer, with the Piece of Resistance attached to his back. Emmet learns of Business's plans to freeze the world with the Kragle, a tube of Krazy Glue with the label partially rubbed out; the Piece of Resistance is the tube's cap. Bad Cop angrily turns on the television, which shows his friends forgetting that he was real and saying that he is nothing. They escape from the melting chamber, and Bad Cop finds this out and orders all his men to attack them. As they were heading into the secret tunnel just past an off-limits area, Emmet reveals that he is just an ordinary guy who accidentally touched the Piece of Resistance after being asked his favorite restaurant, TV show, and song. They arrive at the Old West , where Wyldstyle takes Emmet to the blind wizard Vitruvius disguised as cowboys. Though disappointed that Emmet is not a Master Builder, they are convinced of his potential when he recalls visions of "the Man Upstairs". During his speech, he meets MetalBeard , a pirate with a body made of objects.

Emmet is basically a regular, mediocre guy, kind, humorous, and very light-hearted up-beat. To him, everything in the world, even the negative things, are "awesome", which is the purpose of the song " Everything Is Awesome ", which is his favorite song. He lives in an apartment with no one to hang around with except for "Planty", a potted green plant that Emmet claims as a pet, along with other junk objects. Nevertheless, Emmet still has some nice friends; his neighbors and co-workers in his job of construction, though he is mostly unrecognized and ignored. To satisfy himself, he follows what appears to be a very long, almost endless, list of instructions that show him how to fit in with everyone in the world and always be happy. Emmet eventually and unexpectedly discovers that he was chosen by the prophecy of "The Special" Master Builder, proclaimed by wizard Master Builder Vitruvius, to find the Piece of Resistance to save the Lego World and stop the evil Lord Business.
