The barony De La Warr is of the second creation; however, it bears the precedence of the first creation, , and has done so since shortly after the death of William West, 1st Baron De La Warr. The family seat is Buckhurst Park , near Withyham , Sussex. This toponymic could derive from the Latin word ager , from the Breton gwern , or from the Late Latin warectum fallow. The toponyms Gara, Gaire also appear in old texts cited by Lucien Musset , where the word ga i ra means gore. It could also be linked with a patronymic from the Old Norse verr. The subsidiary title Viscount Cantelupe commemorates the West family's descent from the Anglo-Norman Cantilupe family. The precise legal situation concerning the second creation is murky. The modern rules attempt to regularize medieval practice, but there are many cases that cannot easily be made to fit, whether because a local custom was involved, or because an exception was made, or because the rules were still in flux. This is such a case because William West was heir male but not heir general. Because the original barony was created by writ , the descent is presumed to be to the heir or heirs general, and therefore it fell into abeyance between the daughters of Sir Owen West and their heirs in turn. The second creation has been viewed in at least three ways:. The state of Delaware , the Delaware River , and the Delaware Indian tribe were so-called after the bay, and thus ultimately derive their names from the barony. Many other American counties, townships, and the like derive their names directly or indirectly from this connection. Another member of the West family was William Cornwallis-West — , who was the grandson of the Hon. Frederick West , youngest son of the second Earl.

The Modernist [2] [3] and International Style [4] [5] building was designed by the architects Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff and constructed in In , after an extensive restoration, the De La Warr Pavilion reopened as a contemporary arts centre, encompassing one of the largest galleries on the south coast of England. On 18 February , the bandstand, added early in the 21st century, was destroyed by strong winds from Storm Eunice. The new seafront building was the result of an architectural competition initiated by Herbrand Sackville, 9th Earl De La Warr , after whom the building was named. The 9th Earl, a committed socialist and Mayor of Bexhill, persuaded Bexhill council to develop the site as a public building. Run by the Royal Institute of British Architects , this competition attracted over entrants, many of them practising in the Modernist style. The architects selected for the project, Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff , were leading figures in the Modern Movement.

Lord Hervey , who described De La Warr as a "long, lank, awkward person", thought that "no fitter selection could have been made to disarm the jealousy of the prince, and that a more unpolished ambassador for such an occasion could not have been found in any of the Goth or Vandal courts of Germany. However, he never travelled to America. Lord De La Warr was twice married. There were no children from this marriage. Text description provided by the architects. The persistence of design in the midst of even the severest persecution is one of the most remarkable aspects of classic mid-century European Architecture. Even under forceful Nazi discrimination during their rise to power between world wars, Erich Mendelsohn was able to design the De La Warr Pavilion with Serge Chermayeff during his exodus to Britain before both ultimately fled to the United States. While much of his work was considered more expressionistic than modernistic, his understanding and passion for new materials and construction techniques made him an integral part in spearheading the modernist movement throughout the world. The influence of Erich Mendelsohn was felt in the United States before he ever actually set foot there. By , Mendelsohn had one of the most successful Architectural practices in Germany. When Hitler was named chancellor in , modern architectural commissions in Germany were all but non-existent. Mixed with more open Jewish persecution, Mendelsohn knew he had to leave the country. Together the two were able to assimilate into the British elite and find acclaim among their commissions.
