They get locked up in a camp of a religious sect, and get mistreated, abused and tortured. The story is super engaging, keeping me glued to the screen from start to finish! I applaud Lena's courage to go into the camp just to see her boyfriend, though it can also be argued that it is the silliest thing to do. It shows that love is blind, and rational decision is clouded by love. The conditions in the camp is horrible, made worse by the wicked headmaster who wrongly uses religion to control and abuse people.

The movie begins as a pretty conventional period romantic drama. Lena and Daniel are shipped to a soccer stadium for processing and Daniel gets ratted out. The latter, especially, made him a useful tool for Pinochet, and the colony functioned, after the coup, as a repository for dissidents, who were tortured and imprisoned there. A fascinating, terrible place. One that might have more effectively conveyed to film viewers outside the strictures of a romance-based suspense picture. But, alas, this is the story of Colonia that we have been given. Lena, on learning of this place, dresses way down and hides there, trying to go undercover as a God-seeker. Once the couple is reunited, director Gallenberger does manage to ramp up some effective suspense depicting their efforts to escape. But these mechanics, in turn, diffuse what also wants to be a powerful story of human rights abuse.

I can just imagine the horrible things that must have happened within the colony, so there must be more to the true story, which wasn't brought to the big screen. Despite the film apparently being based on a true story, much of what happens within the sect feels forced, unnatural and over the top. With the same strategy, I just read the hypothesis a bit and then went straight to the movie. So, was this film based on true events, like how Titanic was based on true events, because, what Lena and Daniel went through, is straight out of a movie. With that in mind, "Colonia" becomes a much more experience considering they had to keep somewhat on track with the real life events. Read Edit View history. Just look it up: cults sprout all over the place with millions and even billions of people happy to partake in whatever horrible fairy tale psychopaths can imagine, as long as they don't feel responsible. This is a must see movie for all the right reasons. Anyhow, I don't want to give anything away, just suffice to say - this is worth your time watching!

I was even surprised when at the beginning I saw the name "Emma Watson". Strangely enough, while the movie made this horror more visible, to actually find well documented articles about it has become more difficult, as many are talking about the film rather than reality. The characters there also play a much bigger role than the supporting characters early on, the friends of the couple. The actors are well cast, and this accomplished multi-national ensemble consistently offers up lived-in performances. It was a huge hit and rightfully so, with everything coming together perfectly here. Stumbled across this title. Many have said that the characters weren't sufficiently developed. The contents is real, except for the love story that forms the golden thread. But this is just a minor criticism. Now the full extent of what went on at the real colony is still, allegedly, a matter of conjecture but I won't say anything unless you are not aware of it. She is one of many celebrities who appears in the movie, all who happily mock themselves and the celebrity world culture that they exist within. But the film. Obviously, the actress got to showcase her vocal abilities in this movie, and she really does have a great voice. Take a fascinating true story and make a terribly written, directed and acted mess out of it.
