Some of the settlers seek to get rich quick by discovering alien technology, most others are just trying to survive. After seven Earth years, the planet's slow orbit brings a transition from winter to spring, and many dangerous, horrifying creatures begin to emerge from hibernation, making Pandora even more dangerous. A beacon of hope for the remaining colonists emerges in the form of a mysterious alien Vault carved in the side of a mountain. This Vault is said to contain vast stores of alien technology and secrets. The only problem is that the people who discovered the Vault were completely wiped out by some sort of protective force, with the only evidence of their discovery being a scattered radio transmission, proclaiming the Vault's majesty, but not its location.

This has allowed the franchise to flesh out its world and create a sprawling story throughout its universe, as well as leading players to really fall in love with some of Borderlands ' strongest characters like Tiny Tina. There is still very little known about the Eridians, although the series has dropped tidbits of information throughout its games and players finally got to see their home planet in Borderlands 3.

Tiny Tina is the loud, slightly unhinged demolitions expert of the Borderlands series. Despite her over-the-top personality, she plays a prominent role in the series and even has close bonds with some of the main characters. This has garnered plenty of love for her from the gaming community. Tina was born on the planet of Pandora. She was a pretty normal kid with normal parents — that is, until Hyperion came along. When Tina was younger, the corporation paid a visit to Pandora to mine its Eridium which is a valuable resource in Borderlands. Hyperion also sought to refine the element and, in the process, produced slag as a by-product. After doing some research on Eridium, Handsome Jack learned that slag had mutagenic properties and promptly ordered Hyperion staff to start experimenting with it.
