An arch is a curved vertical structure spanning an open space underneath it. Arch-like structures can be horizontal, like an arch dam that withstands the horizontal hydrostatic pressure load. Arches had several advantages over the lintel , especially in the masonry construction: with the same amount of material it can have larger span, carry more weight, and can be made from smaller and thus more manageable pieces. A true arch is a load-bearing arc with elements held together by compression. It is usually used to designate an arch that has no structural purpose, like a proscenium arch in theaters used to frame the performance for the spectators, but is also applied to corbelled and triangular arches that are not based on compression. A typical true masonry arch consists of the following elements: [10] [11] [12]. A left or right half-segment of an arch is called an arc , the overall line of an arch is arcature [18] this term is also used for an arcade.

Currently we have official packages optimized for the x architecture. We complement our official package sets with a community-operated package repository that grows in size and quality each and every day. Our strong community is diverse and helpful, and we pride ourselves on the range of skillsets and uses for Arch that stem from it. Please check out our forums and mailing lists to get your feet wet. Also glance through our wiki if you want to learn more about Arch. With the release of mkinitcpio v38 , several hooks previously provided by Arch packages have been moved to the mkinitcpio upstream project. To ensure no breakage of users' setup occurs, temporary conflicts have been introduced into the respective packages to prevent installing packages that are no longer compatible. Please note that the mkinitcpio flag --microcode , and the microcode option in the preset files, has been deprecated in favour of a new microcode hook. This also allows you to drop the microcode initrd lines from your boot configuration as they are now packed together with the main initramfs image. We are making dbus-broker our default implementation of D-Bus, for improved performance, reliability and integration with systemd. For the foreseeable future we will still support the use of dbus-daemon , the previous implementation. Pacman will ask you whether to install dbus-broker-units or dbus-daemon-units. We recommend picking the default. For a more detailed rationale, please see our RFC We are happy to announce that the migration of the bugtracker to GitLab is done!

Development focuses on simplicity, minimalism, and code elegance. Arch is installed as a minimal base system, configured by the user upon which their own ideal environment is assembled by installing only what is required or desired for their unique purposes. GUI configuration utilities are not officially provided, and most system configuration is performed from the shell by editing simple text files. Arch strives to stay bleeding edge, and typically offers the latest stable versions of most software. Arch Linux uses its own Pacman package manager, which couples simple binary packages with an easy-to-use package build system. This allows users to easily manage and customize packages ranging from official Arch software to the user's own personal packages to packages from 3rd party sources. The repository system also allows users to easily build and maintain their own custom build scripts, packages, and repositories, encouraging community growth and contribution. The minimal Arch base package set resides in the streamlined [core] repository. In addition, the official [extra], [extra-testing], and [core-testing] repositories provide several thousand high-quality packages to meet your software demands. Arch also offers the Arch Linux User Repository AUR , which contains more than 49, build scripts, for compiling installable packages from source using the Arch Linux makepkg application.

The other way to counteract the forces, and thus allow thinner supports, was to use the counter-arches , as in an arcade arrangement, where the horizontal thrust of each arch is counterbalanced by its neighbors, and only the end arches need to buttressed.
