Rank is a data block which is 64 bits wide without Error Correction Code ECC created using some, or all of the memory chips on a module. The x8 in them specifies the number of banks in the memory module. Higher the number of banks, the fewer the chips in the memory module, the better the reliability and power consumption. Compatibility is generally not an issue in most cases. But you should go through the motherboard manufacturer's guide of supported RAM modules just to make sure if they are compatible or not. But if it is only the 1Rx8 and 2Rx8 in concern, they may be compatible with each other but it's best to check the motherboard manufacturer's list of compatible RAMs.

I have gone through your post and would like to help. Hope that answers your question and you have a great day! Have a great day! Yes, the memory-controller circuits on the motherboard are capable of using the "dual-channel" architecture, as well as operating two "unequal" sticks of RAM in "single-channel" mode. If you use two sticks of RAM that fulfill the requirements of operating in "dual-channel" mode, then dual-channel mode will be used. However, if the two sticks have differing capacity, e.

I'm having a hard time finding infos online including HP product page about wether it is ok to mix 1Rx8 with 2Rx8 in Omen systems in particular, and also in general Moreover, most of the matching RAM sticks I found in online stores seem to be 1Rx8 , at least for "non-unavailable" single sticks not sold as a pair Maybe from another brand? Maybe matching the rank number 2Rx8 is more important than matching the brand? I know about the RAM speed that steps down to or something like that, because of the XMP thing being locked by HP, but that's another problem with its own solution! If your motherboard supports the higher-density "1Rx8" RAM, it should support the lower-density twice as many memory chips on the stick "2Rx8" RAM in a "mixed" environment. But, if you are a belt-and-suspenders kind of person, you probably want to avoid "mixing" the RAM.

The hottest advancement in memory technology for desktop computers in recent years is undoubtedly the release of DDR5 memory and Intel's 12th Gen Core series of processors. But, as always, the memory market is anything but homogenous. The consensus here was that using faster memory did allow for an uplift in practically all of the scenarios we tested. Since that initial article was focused on memory frequencies and latencies, we wanted to take a look at the other elements of the equation for DDR5 performance. We've seen what happens when we play with the first two variables, now what happens when we play with the rest? And, as we'll see in our testing, both ranks and DPCs do impact DDR5 performance, so there is much more to getting the most out of DDR5 memory than just frequency and latencies. So we're excited to see how their own in-house DIMMs do in this respect. With Samsung's DIMMs in hand, we've been able to test between the two different configurations, to see if 1Rx8 versus 2Rx8 is better from a performance perspective. We're also able to measure the impact of moving from 1DPC to 2DPC, an always interesting matter as DDR memory signaling has become increasingly difficult with each generation.

A memory module can contain one, two, or four areas of bit wide data areas, depending on how they are engineered. Edit: just read Timothy's comment; 1rx8 is safer. Discussion What's your favourite video game you've been playing? PC3L can generally replace PC3, but not vice-versa. Dual-rank 2R modules appear to the system as if two memory modules were inserted in that memory channel, which may cause compatibility issues if you have multiple such modules on the same channel.
