Living on opposite sides of the war, Zuko and Katara were initially enemies. Katara protected Aang from Zuko, who wanted to capture the Avatar to regain his honor and return to the Fire Nation from his banishment. Despite harassing Team Avatar several times, Zuko did not harbor ill feelings towards Katara nor wished to hurt her. Instead, he found Katara's missing necklace and used it against her twice, until Aang retrieved it back. The two later fought at the Northern Water Tribe after Katara received waterbending lessons, showcasing the two's equal fighting abilities. Katara took her frustration out on Zuko and expressed her grief over losing her mother to the Fire Nation. Zuko empathized with her, revealing how he also lost his mother to the same people.

Former foes Prince Zuko and Katara join forces to display their impressive bending talents in two new cosplays by celebrating the Avatar: The Last Airbender duo. Despite beginning the show on opposite sides of the war, Zuko and Katara would come closer across the latter two seasons, with Zuko aiding Katara in a personal mission, and the pair working together in its final battles. Taken by photographer buddahchen, the two cosplayers' costumes are faithful to their animated designs, capturing the color motifs of each nation perfectly while also bringing a sense of realism to the outfits, such as the golden trim details on Zuko's top. The first two photos have also been edited to showcase each cosplayer wielding their Water and Fire bending abilities in combat stances, alongside a more casual photo between the two. Despite starting as direct foes to one another across many bitter, violent battles with one another, Zuko and Katara's relationship would see some of the most significant changes across Avatar: The Last Airbender 's original run. The pair began to see eye-to-eye when brought together by their journeys in the Earth Kingdom through the losses of their mothers, a shared pain that would bring the two closer as Zuko helped Katara track down the man who murdered hers. With her having faced her mother's killer thanks to his help, Katara accepted Zuko into the group and forgave his past sins. With the duo's dynamic undergoing such a drastic change across three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender , Katara and Zuko's relationship stands out amongst many of the series' core relationships. Alongside the tensions between the two that shifted as Zuko learned about what kind of person he wanted to be, he and Katara's experiences in regards to their respective mothers helped form a bond few characters shared, one that the pair were able to use to truly move past their pains. As such, Katara and Zuko remain a fan-favorite pairing to this day. Not only do the pair's costumes and buddahchen's photographs capture the character's powers, but also capture the character's personalities, including Zuko's angst-ridden nature and Katara's caring nature. As such, the duo's impressive Katara and Zuko cosplays are a perfect tribute to the two key Avatar: The Last Airbender characters. The original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series and its live-action adaptation are available on Netflix.
He soon does, as Katara uses the rain to make sharp ice spears. Everyone else seems to trust me now.
Any popular show is inevitably going to attract shippers, and Avatar: The Last Airbender is no exception. One of the most hotly contested fan-imagined relationships from the series was between the Waterbender Katara and the Firebender Zuko. Nicknamed "Zutara," fans were torn over whether the creators intended to imply any such relationship, if the two ending up together was ever a realistic possibility, if it was purely imagined or if the very idea was problematic given their imperialistic dynamic. That contention doesn't solely exist in the fandom alone. Sources in the canon itself reveal conflict over whether Katara and Zuko could ever have had a romance, and the disagreement may have been just as heated behind-the-scenes in the writer's room as it was for fans. The show itself was not without moments between the characters that could fuel such theories.
A small change of detail concerning Katara's character in Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1 saw an original episode replaced completely. As of Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1's ending , Katara's character was translated well between the original animation and the Netflix live-action version. From exploring what happened to Sokka and Katara's parents in The Last Airbender to detailing her battle against Master Pakku's sexist customs in the Northern Water Tribe, Katara's character arc mostly resembled that of Nickelodeon's first season. That said, some small changes were made to Katara's character, including a change to Aang and Katara's Last Airbender relationship. Another small alteration involved the earlier scenes of Katara's Waterbending training , with one small detail causing an entire episode of the original show to be removed from live-action. The change in question concerns the Waterbending Scroll from which Katara begins learning bending forms in Netflix's The Last Airbender episode 2. Firstly, it is worth exploring how Katara came to possess the Waterbending Scroll in the original animation. The pirates are selling various trinkets from across the Four Nations, with Katara desiring the titular Waterbending Scroll. The pirates charge too high a price for the Scroll, forcing Katara to steal it from their ship. This kickstarts an episode filled with battles between the main trio, the group of pirates, and Zuko's pursuing Firebending forces until the former escapes with the Waterbending Scroll in tow.

As a teenager, Katara and her brother discovered the young Air Nomad Avatar , Aang , who had been frozen in an iceberg with his bison , Appa , for a century. Realizing Aang was the Avatar, Katara and Sokka continued to travel with him across the world as he mastered the remaining elements, earth and fire. She became Aang's waterbending instructor after their departure from the Northern Water Tribe, replacing Master Pakku , [16] who had instructed them during their time there.
