Ndombolo , also known as dombolo , is a genre of dance music originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Ndombolo customarily features lead vocalists, backup vocalists, guitars, horns , drums, and synthesized sounds. Etymologically, "ndombolo" derives from Kikongo , meaning "to ask or solicit". Baongoli, specializing in Lingala , expounds that "ndombolo" encapsulates a genre of Congolese dance, literally meaning "gorilla" or "chimpanzee". Baongoli posits that this stylized dance mimics gorillas' and chimpanzees' gait, dance, or movements during courtship rituals. Lutumba elucidates that this metaphorical construct emerged as a collective expression of the Congolese populace's hope for an end to the brutality, terror, injustice, and misery perpetuated during the reign of president Mobutu Sese Seko.

The Rumba is a sexy and romantic Latin dance that originated from the Cuban Son. This program covers the International-style Rumba. Normally we don't include the Rumba in our Beginner program, but it's not hard to learn. Many of the figures are essentially the same as those in Cha Cha except that there are fewer steps and the music is slower, making them easy to learn if you already know the Cha Cha.
