A young man stands accused of murder. The evidence is overwhelming.
Proclaiming his innocence, the show then tells the story in retrospect, but it is unclear whether HERO is a reliable narrator. Capped off by brilliant acting, You Don't Know Me takes the classic murder mystery plot and adds new dimensions by taking on the problematic criminal justice system in the UK. The most significant sticking point for many audience members was the open ending of You Don't Know Me , and the unsatisfying TV finale left a bad taste in the mouths of some who had invested so much time in the series' four-episode season. Nevertheless, the thematic elements of the show shined through the ending, and the unsatisfying nature of the finale was actually in keeping with what the mystery series was trying to say about criminal justice. As an unreliable narrator, HERO makes for a compelling lead character as his potentially skewed view of events actually colors the proceedings. His history with the deceased, Jamil Roger Nsengiyumva , is a complicated web of attempted robbery and jealousy, and HERO did try to dispose of Jamil's corpse after he was initially shot by Kyra Sophie Wilde in the robbery-gone-wrong that preceded Jamil's eventual real murder. Though HERO didn't murder Jamil, he did kill one of the gang members who was trying to force Kyra into sex work, so there is blood on his hands in some way.
