He worked as a journalist for Associated Press in the s where he specialized in crime reporting. Over the next 30 years he built up his contacts and reputation, covering stories for New York magazine and contributing to many others, as he became an expert on crime, most especially the organized crime world of the Mafia. In he wrote "Wiseguy" which he subsequently developed into the Academy Award nominated screenplay for Goodfellas with Martin Scorsese. He followed that up with scripts for Casino also with Scorsese and City Hall as well as writing and producing several other crime-based movies and TV shows.

A two-and-a-half- hour biopic must necessarily simplify and omit events. Initially, you have Henry Hill boasting about how cool it is to be a gangster and what a wonderful time he had compared to all the squares in America. An astonishing technique for recovering and cloning dinosaur DNA has been discovered. Henry Hill, started working for the mafia as a kid at 10 years old, and with both his intelligence and street smarts, grew to be the most trusted man in the Lucchesee crime family in NY. Everyone knew who we were, and we were treated like movie stars… truckloads of swag, fur coats, televisions, clothes… paper bags filled with jewelry, a sugar bowl full of coke… free rented cars under phony names, the keys to a dozen hideout apartments… when I was broke I just went out and robbed some more. The biographical account of low-level mafia man Henry Hill was the inspiration for the classic movie Goodfellas. For this reason alone I'm giving it 3 stars. I read this book because of how much I love "Goodfellas," and I was not at all disappointed. The book is the basis for the Academy Award —winning film Goodfellas directed by Martin Scorsese. So when I got the hard copy of the book, I could not resist myself finishing it at once. But the threats - poverty, drugs, a shadowy gangster world - were real. Even at the end, with all the threats I was getting and all the time I was facing behind the wall, I still loved the life. The money and self-interest is everything in this world.
