As of , the VNDB had catalogued a total of 24, visual novels, and its forum had reached 14, users. VNDB contains records on approximately 24, different visual novels and is updated by registered members of the site. The database records information on characters in these visual novels, as well as their developers , their publishers , and their translators, both professional and amateur. The site can be navigated via browsing categories, filtering by criteria such as language, and viewing random pages. VNDB has a public forum where registered members can converse, with each specific visual novel having a discussion page, as well as a section of the site dedicated to general discussion. VNDB can be used as a personal watch list, allowing users to make a wishlist, whitelist, or blacklist, and to mark their progress in a game as finished, abandoned, in progress, etc. VNDB functions as a review aggregator. The database aggregates ratings given to games by users, and displays score statistics and averages. Beginning on 31 August , users are now able to write and submit reviews of visual novels, both "mini reviews" and full reviews. VNDB has a real-time public API for developers who want to interact with the database to, for example, retrieve information or automate tasks related to a personal watch list.

The information cataloged includes official releases, language translation patches, searchable character and staff listings, whether there is an anime adaptation of the VN, and more. There is an extensive collection of tags available for users to apply as they see fit to VNs and to characters. Users can vote each VN on a scale from 1 to 10, as well as voice their opinions on the associated forum for each VN. VNDB explicitly forbids "links to direct downloads, torrents or other means of downloading games". This article or section needs expansion.

Recommendations are made in an automated and purely statistical manner; as such they should be treated more as suggestions for things you might enjoy based on the features and reasons described on your profile page. Occasionally you will notice recommendations for novels that appear confusing or just plain wrong, an explanation of why that novel was recommended can be found by selecting the adjacent question mark icon.
