A videocassette recorder VCR or video recorder is an electromechanical device that records analog audio and analog video from broadcast television or other AV sources and can play back the recording after rewinding. The use of a VCR to record a television program to play back at a more convenient time is commonly referred to as time shifting. VCRs can also play back prerecorded tapes, which were widely available for purchase and rental starting in the 80s and 90s, most popularly in the VHS videocassette format. Blank tapes were sold to make recordings. VCRs declined in popularity during the s and in July , Funai Electric, the last manufacturer of them, ceased production. Ampex introduced the quadruplex videotape professional broadcast standard format with its Ampex VRX in It became the world's first commercially successful videotape recorder using two-inch 5. It was developed by Michael Turner and Norman Rutherford. However, there were several drawbacks as it was expensive, not easy to assemble, and could record only 20 minutes at a time. It recorded in black-and-white, the only format available in the UK at the time as color broadcasts were not available until BBC Two began broadcasting in color in The development of the videocassette followed the replacement by cassette of other open reel systems in consumer items: the Stereo-Pak four-track audio cartridge in , the compact audio cassette and Instamatic film cartridge in , the 8-track cartridge in , and the Super 8 home movie cartridge in In , videocassettes of movies became available for home use through Cartrivision. Cassettes intended for home use were encased in black plastic, and could be rewound by a home recorder, whereas rental cassettes could not be rewound, and had to be returned to the retailer in order to be rewound.

Magnetic tape video recording was adopted by the television industry in the s in the form of the first commercialized video tape recorders VTRs , but the devices were expensive and used only in professional environments. In the s, videotape technology became affordable for home use, and widespread adoption of videocassette recorders VCRs began; [5] the VHS became the most popular media format for VCRs as it would win the "format war" against Betamax backed by Sony [6] and a number of other competing tape standards. The analog revival-film, cassettes, vinyl-is well underway. The problem is that they rely far too much on old, second-hand gear. Pentax is about to launch a new film camera , and this new Fiio Walkman will go on sale next week. And while they're neat, the industry infrastructure isn't there to support building high-quality new cameras. The Fiio uses the same junky playback heads as the cheapest tape players, and most new film cameras are similarly disappointing, barely a step above disposable cameras. Turntables for vinyl records, on the other hand, are as good, or maybe better, than ever. What's going on? Consumer demand for such devices has reached an unprecedented level, and yet it's hard not to suspect that it's coming at a price, boasting outdated playback heads more typical of low-end cassette players than of quality hi-fi players. In , camera company Ricoh announced that its iconic Pentax brand was working on a new film camera. The camera will be a half-frame design, which captures half-sized images onto film for 72 exposures instead of 36 per roll.
