In addition to the two main semesters, UMass also offers a Winter Session, which is a shorter period of time between the Fall and Spring Semesters. The Winter Session is generally around three weeks long and offers students the opportunity to take intensive courses or catch up on credits. Students must meet with their advisors this week to discuss their plan for Spring course registration. All students will be enrolled during this week but faculty will make adjustments during Roster Management Week for classes with stated limits. All Five College registrations must have instructor permission. Information includes instructor, semester offered, updates to description, title, and course restrictions. Courses are not open for editing in mass. ADCs can begin entering course times and room preferences. Friday, October 20 Last Day to withdraw from the College This is the last day that students may withdraw from the College for a semester or more. Students should work with the Office of Student Affairs to withdraw. Monday, October Friday, October 27 Advising Week Students must meet with their advisors this week to discuss their plan for Spring course registration. Course registration during this period is not guaranteed. Friday, November 10 Last day to Withdraw from a course as a First, Second, or Third Year student First, second, and third year students should work with their Class Deans to withdraw from a course by this deadline. A new academic calendar will be in place next year at UMass Amherst, creating a six-week Winter Session, a later end-date for the Spring Semester, and Commencement scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend. The decision was made to academically benefit UMass students in a variety of ways and was announced one year in advance to provide time for future planning. The change, considered in collaboration with the campus administration, was studied and adopted by the Faculty Senate, which has primary responsibility for academic matters. Students will be on campus for an additional period in warmer weather. Building on the successful collaborations that the university has had in recent years with many on-campus and off-campus partners in Amherst, UMass officials anticipate working together to address any concerns about student behavior. Meanwhile, the additional time students spend in the area during an expanded Winter Session and in May means they will also be out and about, patronizing local business and adding to the positive economic impact they provide during the academic year. Specifically, the academic benefits of the new Winter Session include: A six-week term is more conducive to student learning and more pedagogically sound. Six weeks allows students to learn the material and progress through the class in a more preferred manner. Six weeks is also consistent with the Summer Session I and Summer Session II schedules allowing students to experience a consistent course delivery and learning approach whether taking a class during Winter Session or one of the Summer Sessions.
