When Nora Boerner was exposed to the coronavirus in April , she never expected to be feeling the effects 17 months later. Although she didn't have pre-existing conditions before contracting the virus, Boerner, 41, now reports damage to her heart and lungs. Her doctors' "working theory" is that the virus damaged the lining to the micro vessels of her heart; she has an abnormal EKG, wears a nitroglycerin patch and has been classified as immunocompromised. Boerner's symptoms also include fatigue, a metallic taste in her mouth, hair loss, headaches and a feeling of confusion known as "brain fog" among others. These are common among people who experience "long COVID" — or still-unexplained symptoms that linger with people for weeks or months after first catching the virus. The most common were pain, breathing issues, high concentrations of fats or lipids in the blood, fatigue and high blood pressure. The study was conducted by Fair Health, a national nonprofit. Boerner has been told her symptoms might go away over time, or that what she's experiencing could be a new normal. She stresses that sharing her story publicly isn't about her — it's about a broader desire to care for others and help people reflect on how they can prevent the virus from spreading.
