If your credits will not be sponsored by Baskin Engineering, please consult the department with whom you are pursuing Individual Studies coursework. UCSC offers the opportunity for students to receive credit for work outside of regular courses. There are many possibilities: lab research on-campus, a senior thesis project, or internships off-campus Field Study - see below. To arrange an Individual Studies course, you will need a faculty sponsor who is willing to supervise you. Positions such as Lecturers, Postdoc Researchers, and Graduate Students are not eligible to sponsor thesis work. If someone has Professor somewhere in their title you are likely to be fine!

Many students are interested in pursuing independent research projects and need to find a faculty sponsor. Listed below are some tips to help you succeed with an independent study project. Linguistics, for example, has a very useful site on undergraduate research and independent study. Independent projects take a significant amount of time. When you are planning your project, think about what other classes and personal commitments you will have that quarter. One option, for highly motivated students with excellent time management skills, is to do the project during the UCSC Summer Session. Since you will need 6 credits to qualify for financial aid, a 2 credit independent study might be a good addition to your 5 credit class. Overall, you can take up to 15 credits during Summer Seesion. If you want to take more than 15 credits, please discuss it with your academic adviser. The form for independent projects in the summer is due August 1. However, it can be difficult to find a sponsor for the summer because many professors have other time commitments.

Once they have e-signed, all parties will receive an email of the completed form, and the Summer Session staff will enroll you within three business days after May 1.

Independent Study in the Environmental Studies department can take many forms and offers students an opportunity to work directly with Faculty on a research project. In the UCSC catalog, the description is simply " directed reading, supervised research, and organized projects relating to environmental problems". We encourage students to propose an idea to a faculty member who teaches and does research in the area of interest. Independent study projects will carry either 2 units or 5 units, depending on the complexity of the project and how many weekly hours are expected.
