The Dutch rider overcame a late crash to maintain his lead and win the rainbow jersey. It was a world championship race that had a bit of everything. A protest forced the neutralization of the race with kilometers to go. An hour later, the race resumed and the riders made their way to Glasgow, where the field was treated to a mix of rain, wet roads, sun, and even a around the The pace was wickedly quick throughout, with a number of the favorites launching attacks with just under km to go. He quickly put a gap on the chasing three. But it was anything but a smooth ride to the finish for van der Poel, though, who crashed on a turn with

In an incredible performance, van der Poel survived a late crash on the streets of the Glasgow city centre, made slippery by off-and-on rain. After quickly getting back on his bike, the Dutch calmly fixed his shoe and continued to increase his gap on his way to victory with a ripped skinsuit and a bloody knee and hand. Van der Poel attacked from a group of chasers to catch and pass Alberto Bettiol Italy with 22 kilometres to go on the twisty 14km Gasgow circuit. No other male cyclist has ever achieved this in the same year. Van der Poel had to hold back the tears on the podium after pulling on the rainbow jersey. For me, it's the biggest victory on the road. I cannot yet imagine wearing the rainbow for a year. I was just flying around the course until that crash. In that corner, all of a sudden I was on the ground. If this had cost me the world title, I would have slept for a couple of days.

The winner is considered the World Cycling Champion or World Road Cycling Champion and earns the right to wear the Rainbow Jersey for a full year in road race or stage events. The event is a single 'mass start' road race with the winner being the first across the line at the completion of the full race distance. The road race is contested by riders organized by national cycling teams as opposed to commercially sponsored or trade teams , which is the standard in professional cycling. However, in the past there were separate events for amateur riders, mainly from Eastern bloc countries. The event can be held over either a relatively flat course which favors cycling sprinters or over a hilly course which favors more of a climbing specialist or all-round type of cyclist. It usually involves laps of a circuit with a total race distance over kilometres mi in length.
In a memorably dominating and clinically efficient performance, the year-old claimed the victory alone and by more than two minutes ahead of the field. And as the youngest World Champion in nearly three decades, taking the rainbow in Wollongong also augers more than well for the future of a rider already being dubbed one of the modern-day greats of the sport. I was there with Alexey but I felt quite quickly that I wanted to be alone. More than six hours earlier in Dharawal Country in Helensburgh, the peloton rolled out under glorious blue skies, a return to the classic Australian weather that had eluded the Championships in recent days. A volley of immediate attempts to force the first break of the day included ill-fated moves by Lithuania, Swiss and Slovakia.

Elite Road Race Results. The injury clearly took a toll on the year-old: she was dropped the last three times the peloton climbed Mount Pleasant on the Wollongong city circuits but repeatedly clawed her way back to the front to keep herself in contention. The Dutch led a powerful chase with help from Belgium and Australia and caught the breakaway just before the finish. Catching the field by surprise, she held on for the win just one second ahead of Kopecky and Persico, who settled for silver and bronze. The French forced a selection on Mount Pleasant, pulling a handful of riders away from the field, including Evenepoel, who quietly covered the move to ensure Belgium had a card to play. A bit too early at first, but his final acceleration as the leaders passed through the finish line with about 35km finally stuck. Behind him, chaos ensued as the remnants of the leading group battled for silver and bronze, ultimately getting caught inside the final meters after slowing to a near-stop in a 4-man game of cat-and-mouse that killed any chance they had of making the podium.
