State Cheer Competition Results.
By Ken Gustafson. UCA is the oldest and largest cheerleading association in the world. Its goal is to inspire leadership on and off the field by providing high-quality educational training for college, high school and middle school cheerleaders. The Southland Varsity Cheerleading Squad competed with 20 other cheer squads, totaling close to girls from all over Georgia. During the first three days at camp, the girls participated in learning new cheers, chants, dances, pyramids and stunts. Final competitions took place on the fourth day.

A total of 27 athletes made the trip down I and I, where they learned new material and practiced for plus hours each day. The squad competed in two categories — Camp Routine and Game-day, where all their hard work paid off. We had a plan and they worked so hard on that plan. During the four-day camp that ran from Tuesday to Friday, the EHS squad learned the camp dance along with several cheers and sideline dance that they incorporated into a routine. Nanney added there were a total of 15 teams that the Cyclone cheerleaders went against with 14 of those teams hailing from Tennessee with one from Ohio. Tuffy and Stormy who are the mascots for the Cyclones also benefited from the trip as the duo were able to work with a mascot coach as well as the well loved Tennessee mascot Smokey. They were eager to learn. UCA camps are presented to help teams to prepare for game day which begins at a Varsity Spirit summer camp with a curriculum centered around being a Crowd Leader, Spirit Raiser, Ambassador, Athlete and Entertainer, all five of which are called upon on game day. Our camp curriculum teaches teams how to use spirit-raising tools like signs, poms and megaphones properly, what types of skills are effective in leading the crowd, and how to act before, during and after the game.
All teams will begin with a BAND CHANT followed by an offensive or defensive cue led by the announcer in which the teams will answer definitively with their offensive or defensive sideline.

The Sideline and Cheer will be evaluated separately, allowing teams to receive feedback from the UCA Staff and a ribbon based on the performance. The Band Chant will not be evaluated but will be added to the overall Game Day performance and be included as part of the Game Day Championships on the final day of camp. The use of spirit raising props like signs, poms, megaphones or flags is highly encouraged for each element. Squads are also encouraged to incorporate practical skills that enhance their crowd leading ability. NOTE: Please review skill restrictions below. A cue will not be given to start the Band Chant. Teams will be private coached and prepared by the UCA Staff for both scenarios. We strongly encourage the use of practical skills stunts or tumbling that still allow the squad to adjust quickly to either situation. After the Sideline, teams must return to the performance surface and show a clear separation before the next element. Since this element will not be cued by the announcer, teams should transition to this section following a clear end to the Sideline.

The format for Regionals and Nationals is inspired by what teams do at home and is similar to camp with the addition of Fight Song as a fourth element. Teams are permitted, but not required, to use camp material to demonstrate the game day environment at their school. With all four elements combined, the Game Day performance cannot exceed a 3 minute time limit. All skill restrictions below will be enforced. Teams should demonstrate spirit and enthusiasm while entering the performance floor and before the music begins.
