Turn closet into mudroom

I am back today with a little more information about how we converted our hallway coat closet into a mudroom. Great timing huh? It was madness but it was done in time for the holiday and it has worked out great.

Right when you walk into our house we have this coat closet. I had been wanting to put in a DIY mudroom closet somewhere that we could sit to put our shoes on, hang coats, etc… but I had never taken on a DIY project this big. Quite frankly… power tools scare me a bit. If you are reading thing and considering a mudroom closet makeover… I promise you can do it if you follow these steps! The whole process took me about 4 days.

Turn closet into mudroom

With two in school now, and four in footwear, we have quickly run out of space for book bags, shoes, and coats. The wheels starting turning, and I took a little look at my own coat closet. I looked at my closet, and wondered if I could turn it into the mudroom of my dreams, even though it was a super tiny space. Step 1: Remove the closet door, remove baseboards, and give your closet a new coat of paint! We removed the door for a couple of reasons. Second, our coat closet door and our front door open right into each other, and kept causing traffic jams. I chose a beautiful gray that allowed the space to be updated, but also be neutral enough to go with the rest of the house. Step 2: Cut and glue the beadboard panels. Our beadboard measurements were based on shelf placement. We wanted the top of the side panels to match the bottom of the lowest shelf. The top of the back panel would correspond with the top of the highest shelf. We used the brad gun and Liquid Nail to attach the panels. Because of the size of our closet, the bench had to built inside of it. The sides and middle were screwed in from the bottom particle board screws! Then the middle board was screwed on and we waited patiently while the inspector made sure things were up to code.

In our second house, I made the kids stand on the bench and reach up and I placed turn closet into mudroom hooks at a height where I knew they could reach them. It is reasonably priced and very good quality!

Our coat closet was fairly organized, using file boxes as shelves for shoes and wood boxes on the shelf for winter hats, scarves, and gloves. Cut a second piece of plywood and attach it to the top of the legs as your bench using screws. Measure twice or 3 times! Patch any holes in the wall left by previous fixtures and the door frame.

Cut the Baseboard to fit the front of the bottom of the bench and the sides of the wall. Use your Kregjig to create pocket holes in your 2x4s. There are many ways to convert a closet into a mudroom. Every home is different… the entryway in our first home was much different than the entryway in our second home , and both of those were very different from the entryway in our third home! We use the mudroom hooks to hang jackets, purses, backpacks, hats, keys, and more. You will use a nail gun to secure them. The dividers were screwed in from the top and the bottom. The beadboard wipes off so easily i have it in other parts of the house , so with lots of kids as you know , it was a no-brainer. Put a corner support beam in each corner and rest your long board on them.
