The first episode titled " " aired in Japan on January 11, on the Noitamina programming block. The anime is directed by Mamoru Kanbe , whose other works include 's Elfen Lied. Season 1 of the anime contains a total of 12 episodes , which adapted Chapter 1 to Chapter 37 of the manga as well as several Omake chapters that are included as extra pages in certain volumes. The season also adapted the entirety of the Introduction Arc and the Jailbreak Arc. Season 2 contains a total of 11 episodes. Season 2 was announced in the 18th issue of the Weekly Shonen Jump.

The Temple serves a completely different purpose in the manga than it does in the anime. However, the painting of Day and the Night is present on the ceiling just like in the manga, proving that it is the same Temple. While the Evil Blood is present in the anime , it is only used as a tool to prevent degeneration. The political elements of the Evil Blood and on a larger scale, the farm system being used by the wealthy and high ranking Demons to control the civilians is absent from the anime. The Queen and the Five Regent Families also do not play a role in the anime, being reduced to cameo appearances in the final episode.
