Toyota celica 85 gt
As a 10thth grader, life was more than a little angst-filled. Little things were deemed hugely important, and genuine hugely important things got blown off. The future was vast, the future was unclear, the future was scary, the future was filled with promise. Some of that promise was kept, some was not. And there was the car. The single most important thing in the life of an adolescent boy as it could supposedly help you procure the next most important thing in the life of an adolescent boy. Some cars jog the memories, some bring a flood of them. This car does that for me. I never owned one of these, I always wanted one, I pined for one, I still swoon a little when I too rarely see one. And this particular one, to me, is perfection.

The convertible market in America was a pretty desolate place in ; while purpose-built European drop-tops like the Alfa Romeo Spider and Mercedes-Benz SL were imported in dribs and drabs, the few American convertibles for sale, including the Cadillac Eldorado, Dodge ES and Ford Mustang, were all coupe-based conversions. While these cars fed the increasing demand for wind-in-your-hair motoring, their compromised aesthetics and questionable structural rigidity tended to leave something to be desired. If you were a fan of Japanese imports twenty years ago, you'll understand this Celica's undeniable appeal; with its hidden headlamps, pronounced fender flares, deep-dish alloys and angular wedge shape, it hits all the right Eighties styling cues. Although many of today's Japanese cars feature an international design language, our feature Celica GT-S Convertible, built in April , and owned by Amy and Alan Albright of Delanson, New York, proudly exhibits its busy form, complex detailing and "techy" appeal that can be directly traced back to the early s, when Japanese cars proudly proclaimed their national heritage. Step over the thick sill and sink down into the Celica's Supra-sourced, grippy cloth high-back bucket seats, whose ample bolsters and multitude of adjustments ensure a supportive perch. You're faced with a rectilinear dashboard that puts all major controls at hand, in Toyota's typically ergonomic fashion. While the two-spoke steering wheel looks like the one in your Mom's Camry, it gives a clear sight line to the white and orange on black instrument panel, with its highly visible 8,rpm tach, mph speedo, temperature, fuel and--a treat in an era of idiot lights--amperage and oil pressure gauges. No need for a radio anyway--part of the fun of driving a drop-top is the whistle of the wind in your ears.

Though they were hardly rivals when they were new, the third-generation Toyota Celica shares more than a few attributes with Porsche's a big, 2. They were both big sellers when they were new, though they occupied different market segments--that's the difference between an entry-level model from a premium sports-car builder and an upscale version of an economy car. That price disparity continues today. No, it doesn't come with the prestige of the Stuttgart badge. But it does offer the durability and reliability that made Toyota famous. That the third-generation Celica continues to fly under the radar is both good and bad; prices are low, but there's virtually no aftermarket support for these cars, once you get past the drivetrain that was shared with so many other Toyotas.
