I spent over an hour getting fitted with a Titleist rep for these clubs and got them set up exactly the way I need them. Since moving here I have been able take advantage of the fall release dates for new clubs. The over seeding season had just wrapped up and courses were in pristine condition. It was a perfect time to try out new irons. The Titleist AP2 irons looked really good in the bag. My rounds with these irons have proven to be very successful. My iron play has been very precise. My GIR went up as did proximity to the hole. There was an immediate comfort level with these irons and it showed on the course. I really liked the turf interaction with these irons too. The camber on the sole is great for clean crisp shots off the firm AZ fairways. One of the big advancements of the Titleist AP2 irons for me was the better ball flight. Previous models were typically a little higher launching than I wanted.
There was an immediate comfort level with these irons and it showed on the course.
Many of you who play Titleist AP2 irons probably don't realise that you a playing with a tour iron, but you are. The AP2 was the number one iron model on Tour globally and therefore Titleist has officially badged the AP2 as a tour iron and placed it in their tour category alongside the MB and CB irons rather than with the similarly named AP1 and AP3. The fact that the chassis size, unchanged since the first model in , is similar to the MB and CB blades probably makes this OK, although the nomenclature that puts AP1 and AP3 in the distance section of the range would beg to differ. Differing was something their tour players said not to do with the AP2 as they liked the looks and performance and the lofts are also the same as before, so what is new? Well, the aim is for more forgiveness from more consistent ball speed across the face and Titleist say that they have done this in a couple of ways.
I actually played the Titleist AP2 irons for the last portion of the golf season with quite a bit of success. Like a true gear geek, I was enthusiastic for the AP2 from Titleist this season, and I was eager to get my hands on them to see how one of my favorite irons of all time was updated and improved. The calling card of the AP2 iron line is the player looks and performance with added forgiveness. There are no major changes there, so players looking to update their crusty or AP2s should be perfectly happy. The biggest difference in looks comes from the cavity of the club and its updating badging. Though many are criticizing the branding of the AP2 and are unhappy with its appearance, the branding is in line with the current series and has a little more of a modern look to it. Personally, I feel the AP2 is a traditional staple for Titleist and would have preferred that they stuck with the appearance favored by most loyalists, but the new branding is not quite a deal breaker for me. The sound of the AP2 is still the traditional soft click with a nice thwack from the turf interaction. Mishits have a similar click but a little more emptiness in the tone to let you know you missed the sweet spot.
