Common antics of the trucks include singing, name-calling, holding back, bumping and teasing the engines. The trucks are not known for common sense, and will cause trouble regardless of the consequences. They are also shown to be somewhat manipulative and can take advantage of other engines that do not know much about them. When they get used to certain engines pulling them, another engine in the yard may cause confusion or anger for the trucks. When it comes to playing tricks, however, one engine is as good as another and they will carry out their plans regardless of who is pulling them. It is very rare that the trucks will behave and few engines are known to be able to handle them. The only engines the trucks are known not to play tricks on are Edward , Stepney , Hiro and Salty , who are experienced with handling trucks and know how to properly discipline them when they misbehave.

Troublesome Trucks , retitled Foolish Freight Cars in American releases, is the ninth episode of the first series. It has been several days since James damaged one of his coaches , and since then has been shut up in the shed as a punishment. Having been left alone and not allowed out to push coaches or trucks, James begins to cry thinking that no one will ever see his red paint again. However, the Fat Controller finally returns and tells James that he hopes that he will be a better engine as he has caused a lot of embarrassment for the railway. James sincerely apologises and promises to behave. The Fat Controller accepts his apology and assigns him to pull some trucks. James is delighted to be let out and eagerly goes to work. At the station, Thomas brings James his trucks and teases him about bootlaces before leaving, much to his annoyance.
