Even at 1am I knew we had a found something very special on arrival at The Temple Lodge. Although I cannot take credit for the find, Anna Chittenden, the curator of the Lost Guides, an essential to anyone travelling through and around Bali, takes full credit for highlighting this place. This top-range boutique joint overlooking the waves at Bingin offers a bunch of unique suites individually designed and decorated with coral stone walls and thatched roofs set among a lush and fragrant tropical garden dripping with multicoloured blooms, with the centrepiece a moderately sized but deep horizon pool. Rooms are secluded, spacious and romantic with the best suites and needless to say the priciest perched right on the cliff—the Coral Cave Suite carved right out of the cliff itself. Several rooms are open to the elements and the bold monkeys that are known to nick stuff. Fans cool if the natural breeze is not doing its thing and the more enclosed rooms provide air-con. Mozzie-netted beds protect you from the smaller critters, but if you are after a pristine hermetically sealed resort, this is not the place for you. Eclectic styling features distressed antique wooden elements and furnishings—think peeling paint and fading colours along with handcrafted stone walls and quirky creative touches. The poolside restaurant offers a choice of delicious healthy options served communally at long tables, an opportunity to mingle with other guests. The Temple Lodge also offers daily yoga at an additional charge also open to outside guests as well as an on-site spa and sauna. Friendly staff round out this terrific option.
