Psychological research refers to research that psychologists conduct for systematic study and for analysis of the experiences and behaviors of individuals or groups.
Scientists are engaged in explaining and understanding how the world around them works, and they are able to do so by coming up with theories that generate hypotheses that are testable and falsifiable. Theories that stand up to their tests are retained and refined, while those that do not are discarded or modified. In this way, research enables scientists to separate fact from simple opinion. Having good information generated from research aids in making wise decisions both in public policy and in our personal lives. Figure 1.

Have you ever wondered whether the violence you see on television affects your behavior? Are you more likely to behave aggressively in real life after watching people behave violently in dramatic situations on the screen? Or, could seeing fictional violence actually get aggression out of your system, causing you to be more peaceful? How are children influenced by the media they are exposed to? A psychologist interested in the relationship between behavior and exposure to violent images might ask these very questions. The topic of violence in the media today is contentious. Since ancient times, humans have been concerned about the effects of new technologies on our behaviors and thinking processes. In our world of quickly changing technologies, questions about the effects of media continue to emerge. Is it okay to talk on a cell phone while driving? Are headphones good to use in a car?
Psychologists use the term operational definition to refer to a precise statement of how a conceptual variable is turned into a measured variable.
Philosophers, religious leaders, and politicians, among others, also strive to provide explanations for human behaviour. But psychologists believe that research is the best tool for understanding human beings and their relationships with others. Rather than accepting the claim of a philosopher that people do or do not have free will, a psychologist would collect data to empirically test whether or not people are able to actively control their own behaviour. The statements made by psychologists are empirical, which means they are based on systematic collection and analysis of data. All scientists whether they are physicists, chemists, biologists, sociologists, or psychologists are engaged in the basic processes of collecting data and drawing conclusions about those data. The methods used by scientists have developed over many years and provide a common framework for developing, organizing, and sharing information. The scientific method is the set of assumptions, rules, and procedures scientists use to conduct research.
Figure 1. The researcher who more often than not is really a small group of researchers formulates a research question, conducts a study designed to answer the question, analyzes the resulting data, draws conclusions about the answer to the question, and publishes the results so that they become part of the research literature. Because the research literature is one of the primary sources of new research questions, this process can be thought of as a cycle. New research leads to new questions, which lead to new research, and so on. But even in these cases, the researcher would start by checking the research literature to see if the question had already been answered and to refine it based on what previous research had already found.

Science is not just knowledge. It is also a method for obtaining knowledge. Scientific understanding is organized into theories.

In some cases data can be kept anonymous by not having the respondents put any identifying information on their questionnaires. A sample informed consent form is shown in Figure 3. Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 58, — Scientific research has provided information that has improved the lives of many people. Like flipping a coin, each individual was just as likely to be assigned to either type of motivation. Main article: Observational study. It is critical that the observer be as unobtrusive and as inconspicuous as possible: when people know they are being watched, they are less likely to behave naturally. To achieve verifiability, researchers must make sure to document their methods and clearly explain how their experiment is structured and why it produces certain results. A dependent variable is what the researcher measures to see how much effect the independent variable had. Westport, CT: Praeger. Once data is collected from both groups, it is analyzed statistically to determine if there are meaningful differences between the groups. No single theory is able to account for all behaviour in all cases. How were the men who participated and their families harmed as a function of this research? Bradburn et al. Can we generalize this conclusion to everyone?
Despite the differences in their interests, areas of study, and approaches, all psychologists have one thing in common: They rely on scientific methods. Research psychologists use scientific methods to create new knowledge about the causes of behavior, whereas psychologist-practitioners , such as clinical, counseling, industrial-organizational, and school psychologists, use existing research to enhance the everyday life of others.
As with ethical decisions involving human participants, a set of basic principles has been developed that helps researchers make informed decisions about such research; a summary is shown below. The other method of observational research is non-participant observation. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 51, — The theory states that children pass through a series of cognitive stages as they grow, each of which must be mastered in succession before movement to the next cognitive stage can occur. The New York Times. If you do choose to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time without prejudice. A more illuminating approach is to compare the entire distributions, for example with a graph, as in Figure Research in psychology may cause some stress, harm, or inconvenience for the people who participate in that research.
