A trip to the cinema — especially as a family — is a rare treat for us. It is mostly budget that restricts us, as we love watching films together, but for How To Train Your Dragon 2 we made an exception. We saw the first HTTYD film just after our son was born and now, two and a half years later, it is easily our most-watched DVD, with everyone able to quote large tracts of dialogue and the toddler terrorist often plays games of make believe where he is Hiccup and our poor black cat is Toothless. It is not hard to imagine, therefore, how keen we were to see the new sequel and, even better, found that it was to be aired a week before general release at a cinema we had always wanted to visit. The smell of sweets and popcorn hangs in the air, and the whole place has a sense of event that is rather lacking in the large multiplexes. We had also hoped that the smaller screens and more intimate rooms would be less intimidating to the toddler terrorist who has only been to a couple of films before. The toddler terrorist — enjoying his popcorn before it all went wrong…. The seats were plush and comfortable, the 3D glasses provided were a mere 70p each cheaper than some places and came in terrorist-size — there was even a stack of booster seats available for those lacking in stature. The toddler has always been pretty fearless. Countless people have commented upon it. Lately, though, something has changed. I took him out, then back in again when the husband assured me Hiccup had arrived. We go home?

The film weaves together the most urgent themes of our times: climate change, class, gender and racial inequality, and the ideas that groups around the world have generated in order to save the planet. Afterwards, there will be the opportunity for cinemagoers to participate in a post-film discussion facilitated by members of Greener Henley and Picturehouse Green Screen. Flick Beckett, Head of Green Steering Group for Picturehouse Cinema shares how important it is to be addressing such issues through the medium of film as well as highlighting some of the ways their network is running a more sustainable cinema too. The Green Screen initiative is a way to engage and inspire our customers with regular environmental-themed screenings, discussions and campaigns. As Anita Chitaya says in the film — it takes many ants to move a grasshopper; It will take all of us working together collectively to combat the climate crisis. At a more local level, The Regal and Picturehouse are tackling energy waste via weekly, site-specific reports that pinpoint areas for reduction and change in practice. Customers also get a discount on hot drinks when bringing their own reusable cups. We welcome this opportunity to highlight these critical issues and look forward to hosting more events like this in the future.
