Although The Hourglass is a relatively newly built pub, it still has a rustic and cosy atmosphere, yet an open and airy feel to the layout. We ordered a bottle of wine and a beer while we pondered over the menu and enjoyed some complimentary bread. Danny chose the classic prawn cocktail garnished with king prawns to start, which was served with salad and wholemeal sliced bread. The prawns were tasty and went down a treat. I opted for the home-made chicken liver parfait with a hint of brandy, served with red onion and chilli jam and toast. There was plenty for a starter and the presentation was simple. The flavours in the parfait mixed with the chilli jam worked beautifully together. The meat was tasty and the potatoes were well flavoured with herbs. The jus was rich and accented the dish well. This was also served with seasonal vegetables which were fresh and tender. I chose the monkfish from the specials menu. This was to be served with a bacon and mushroom cream. This was cooked well and the sauce was pleasant, just not what I had anticipated. Car park. Disabled access.

He is a Swizz chef and restaurateur who was Maitre Chef des Cuisines at the Dorchester Hotel for thirteen years, during which time its restaurant achieved a rating of two stars in the Michelin Guide. My family and I were trying out our kayaks on the Kennet and Avon Canal. We put in at Devizes Warfe, then paddled here at a relaxed pace for just over an hour. When we saw the hour glass we couldn't believe our luck!

When we went on to pudding, I was once again drawn by temptation and plumped for the pecan pie, especially when the waitress confirmed it came warm, and yes of course I could have ice cream with it if I preferred it to the runny cream advertised.
