In his youth, it is known that Hatt was a boy scout and at one point had chicken pox. When he was a young man, every year on his birthday, he would ride around in his special carriage the fat controller by Edward. A very disciplined man with a very high moral code, known for getting firm and strict with his engines when they act out, but also praises them when they are heroes and does his best to protect them from harm. An intelligent man, who knows far more than the engines ever will, who knows how to utilise the rules in an honest, fair but surprising way.
