Lopsided encounters in wonky ft Mainbreak defined Finals Day today, with the potential of juicy match-ups generally not translating into meaningful competition. Event winner Gabe Medina looked strong from the opening ride, which was the first of the day, a three-turner for a 6, swellnet margaret river. He sealed it with carves into the lip line for a 7. It was Medina's superior leg strength which really set his path to victory - the ability to sit down on an extended swellnet margaret river turn drive until the section presented itself.

The future of Western Australia's premier surfing event is in limbo after local residents objected to the continued staging of the Margaret River Pro. The annual event has been a fixture on the ASP and WSL calendar more than thirty years, and draws the cream of international surfing and thousands of spectators to Margaret River and the surrounding South West each year. But with the World Surf League's five-year permit to hold the event in Margaret River now up for review, the Shire of Augusta Margaret River has reserved its decision on whether to continue its support for the event from next year on. A period of public consultation that finished in October drew 69 objections, 48 statements of support, and 24 indifferent responses. While the event is fully funded for next year, council support is still required for the competition organisers to access the public land and infrastructure where the competition takes place. The WSL has made a variety of community support commitments as part of it's ongoing proposal, including environmental and recycling programs on site, the engagement of local suppliers and businesses and the general promotion of the region's tourist attractions in the lead-up to the event.

Autumn is really kicking into gear around Australia with both the east and west coasts due to be hit by large swells over the coming week. Easter Friday in WA's south-west was big. Not quite Mark Foo's Unridden Realm big, although there wasn't many waves getting ridden when photographer Louis Stone was shooting. So although this gallery is short of people riding waves it gives a great indication of size on Good Friday. To check more of Louis' work visit his website. Yet as good as the surf was at Mainbreak - and at 6'-8' and offshore it was pretty damn good! The Box was throwing out meaty slabs for a hungry horde, amongst them Kelly Slater who attracted an armada of boats and even a heliicopter to document his session. As far as summers go West Oz is having a cracker. While there's been nothing huge they've been copping plenty of mid-range swell with good conditions to boot. Last week our Margaret River reporter, Calvin Best, swum out to his local to photograph a few of the lads at close range.

Filipe Toledo might not like it much though. Good on them. Try being locked out swellnet margaret river your local surf break for 6 weeks so some Merican company can exploit it and run vip evemts in the carpark thru the duration and during the best time of year for surfincluding thru school and easter holidayswhat a farceas if its not crowded enough already, swellnet margaret river.

Hawaii turned on thanks to the perfect, peak season sand or lack thereof and consistent mid-period swell, and over Easter they scored the best run of waves the Surf Coast had seen in six months. Even better, as the tour leaves town the rain and onshore winds are moving back in. However, as the caravan heads west to Margaret River, the run of great competition surf just might be coming to an end. The Margaret River region hasn't really kicked into gear this autumn, owing to the same factors affecting South Australia and Victoria. While last week delivered quality groundswell for Victoria and South Australia, and the coming week will too, the swell-producing storms have been forming just a little too far east and late in Western Australia's swell window. With the Western Australian swell window extending from south of South Africa, all the way to just south of the Australian continent, it's open to myriad swell sources, but again it looks like we'll see high pressure dominating these swell windows ahead of the first day of competition next Sunday. Western Australia, and more so Margaret River, pumps when strong polar storms project up from the Heard Island region, before being deflected away by high pressure sitting further east towards the Bight. This produces large surf with favourable winds out of the eastern quadrant. Instead, we're due to see a large high setting up south-west of the state during the middle to end of this week, deflecting away any major storm potential for the first day of the waiting period, with a surface trough due to form into a severe mid-latitude low this Friday.

Share on. I can take or leave the contest but the crowds will continue to increase regardless as the trend of people leaving Australian cities ie, Perth to move to small coastal towns has been hyper-accelerated by Covid. Baron mamiya and Ian Gentiil have both made the cut and ranked above obviously slater. The only other thing to defeat John at Mainbreak is the dicky knee. You either love him or hate him and that's fair enough. Been there, done that! Well most of them to be honest. Taj freesurfs there. One where he fell apart. See copyright at the end. That pic of Griff is pretty critical. Lots of good points there SR.

The opening days of the Margaret River Pro provided quality surf with clean conditions, climaxing on Saturday to ft as competitors vied to make the mid-season cut. Since then, a strong low has set up camp right off the tip of Western Australia bringing poor weather and surf along with strong winds.

A better spectacle? Love that swellnet is free to access, also the lively debate. If the pros are here, let them have a crack at north point if it's on. Like putting boobs on Slater so he can get his 12th? That ship sailed long ago. I fucken hate the shit backpacker party scene that trashes my local beach. Hard to disagree with you Steve regarding Slater's wildcard but I'm gonna try. Not that I am suggesting anyone on tour is juicing, just that pro surfing would be no outlier as a pro sport where that would confer an unfair advantage. Lets focus on the surfing. Huge props to her for being one of the only women so far that i've seen on the world tour who has stepped up to the challenge of waves of consequence. Mmm good point.
