McMahon could not bait Undertaker though as the team won the match [11] but did not unify as a team for long, defending the titles until August 10, losing in a four corners tag match to Kane and Mankind. The next week, Austin arrived on Raw in a hearse and challenged Undertaker to a fight; at the end of the show Undertaker came to the ring and Austin followed, however when Undertaker fully faced Austin it became apparent it was actually Kane in his brother's attire, using his hair to hide his mask previously. Last month at Fully Loaded , Rock and Triple H fought for the Intercontinental Championship in a two out of three falls match which ended in a no contest. The two continued their rivalry while leading up their respective factions Nation of Domination and D-Generation X. On the August 17 episode of Raw is War , DX and the Nation fought in a street fight which the Nation won when Rock rammed a ladder in Triple H's face causing him to bleed from the mouth. D'Lo Brown defended his European Championship against Val Venis , initially showing respect to him when the two slapped hands. However, Brown would soon use his chest protector to gain leverage over Venis when the latter made an early advantage.

If there has ever been a Summerslam that could be put on par with Wrestlemania as far as build up and importance goes, this is it. The Attitude Era of was going full speed ahead with nothing in sight stop it as Austin vs. McMahon was dominating the wrestling world. The idea is that there was a conspiracy led by Vince to get the title off of Austin. The reason you had to see every show was no one knew who else was in on it.

Fans who enjoyed the build to the Brock Lesnar-Samoa Joe Universal Title match may have enjoyed the run-up to SummerSlam , had they been watching at the time. The "Highway to Hell" represented many twists and turns in the feud between WWE's two top babyfaces, especially as Undertaker looked to be aligning with evil brother Kane. The not-so-subtle "coincidences" and story wrenches added much intrigue to what was one of WWE's most anticipated matches in some time. On the whole, SummerSlam was an extension of WrestleMania Like its 'Mania forebear, it epitomized the chaotic feeling of the Attitude Era, with violent matches and hate-filled encounters running up and down the card. The Attitude Era was known for its overbooking, and since this show had a ladder match, a no-DQ tag team match, a Lion's Den match, and a hair-vs-hair match, it fits right in with the eager excess of It's on the high-end of great SummerSlams, and for good reason.
