On its first trip, the Aurora, a deep-space vessel built by the Alterra Corporation, was dispatched to the furthest ends of unknown space, precisely to the Ariadne Arm. Its main objective is to construct a PhaseGate in the Ariadne Arm, which is a part of high-speed space transit infrastructure. The Aurora is physically waylaid by a mystery energy pulse and crashes into the planet after entering the orbit of B. Several crew members, including Ryley Robinson who is the player character, escape into life pods and launch them from the Aurora during the descent.

Tensions built as the mercenary insisted they leave the island and move into the ocean, citing the waning food supplies, subnautica death, lack of resources on the island, and desire for discerning the origin of the alien artifact as justifications for doing so.
