As the spirit movie of Spirit and Rain from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarronshe names the horse "Spirit" after his father, spirit movie, and Lucky immediately begins to bond with him.

Parents need to know that Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is a movie about a wild mustang stallion that cannot be tamed in the "Wild West. No real role models. The antagonists are a regiment of U. Cavalry, who are shown fighting and imprisoning Native Americans, kidnapping horses, and voicing opinions that the West is theirs to conquer. Horses in frequent peril. Lead horse taken from his family by U. Lead horse shown trying to be trained and broken by a cavalryman. After his attempts fail, cavalryman orders the horse to be tied up, denied food and water for three days. Horses trapped in raging rapids, shown to be almost dead from near-drowning. Lead horse escapes from being part of a team dragging a locomotive up a hill, causes the locomotive to fall and roll down the hill, endangering men and horses, destroying buildings, explosions. Rifle shots. Horse kicks and throws off the men who try to tame him.

Critic Roger Ebert gave the film three stars out of four and said in his review, "Uncluttered by comic spirit movie characters and cute sidekicks, Spirit is more pure and direct than most of the stories we see in animation — a fable I suspect younger viewers will strongly identify with, spirit movie.

The film was directed by Kelly Asbury and Lorna Cook in their feature directorial debuts from a screenplay by John Fusco , based on an idea by Jeffrey Katzenberg , who produced the film alongside Mireille Soria. Set in the Old West in the late 19th century, the film follows Spirit, a Kiger mustang stallion voiced by Matt Damon as a narrator , who is captured during the American Indian Wars by the United States Cavalry ; he is eventually freed by a Lakota man named Little Creek with whom he bonds, as well as a mare named Rain. In contrast to the anthropomorphic style of animal characters in other animated features, Spirit and his fellow horses communicate with each other through non-linguistic sounds and body language albeit with many human facial expressions and reactions. In the 19th-century American West , a Kiger mustang colt , Spirit, is born to a herd of wild horses; he grows into a stallion , and assumes the leadership of the herd. One night, upon following a strange light near his herd, Spirit finds horses tied to a log and their wranglers sleeping around a campfire. The men awaken, and, after a chase, capture Spirit and take him to a US cavalry fort.

The animals do not speak in "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron," and I think that's important to the film's success. It elevates the story from a children's fantasy to one wider audiences can enjoy, because although the stallion's adventures are admittedly pumped-up melodrama, the hero is nevertheless a horse and not a human with four legs. There is a whole level of cuteness that the movie avoids, and a kind of narrative strength it gains in the process. The latest animated release from DreamWorks tells the story of Spirit, a wild mustang stallion, who runs free on the great Western plains before he ventures into the domain of man and is captured by U. Cavalry troops. They think they can tame him. They are wrong, although the gruff-voiced colonel voice of James Cromwell makes the stallion into a personal obsession. Spirit does not want to be broken, shod or inducted into the Army, and his salvation comes through Little Creek voice of Daniel Studi , an Indian brave who helps him escape and rides him to freedom.
