Will Ferrell's Eurovision film has generated significant buzz among Icelanders. After watching, it's easy to see why. This parody ode to the country is packed with hilarious cultural references that only locals and true Iceland fans will appreciate. So if you aren't a Nordic expert, here are the top 5 running gags and references that probably went right over your head. But the truth is, they were mostly created to be a silly double entendre for the running joke that Lars and Sigrit might be brother and sister. So in this case, we have Erik's son and Erik's daughter. Icelanders take their names very seriously and can only choose a name for their child from the pre-approved list of the Icelandic Naming Committee.

Due to the COVID pandemic , the contest was cancelled, and the film was subsequently released a month later, on June Lars has one dream: to win the Eurovision Song Contest. But at the local bar where they perform, the only song the audience wants to hear is the suggestive nonsense song "Ja Ja Ding Dong". Sigrit's mother Helga also disapproves of their partnership, saying that Lars is holding Sigrit back, and that she will never hit the "Speorg note"—a note that can only be sung when being your truest self—when singing with him. Lars is so ecstatic about their participation that he rings the church belltower, resulting in him being arrested by a policeman for falsely signalling an emergency. Lars, to his defense, says that the town is near death and that Fire Saga's participation in the contest is the only chance their town has to be alive. Sigrit convinces the police officers to free him. Sigrit, who believes in the old Icelandic tradition of elves , asks the elves for help to get them into the contest in the hope that if Fire Saga wins, Lars will return Sigrit's romantic feelings for him. A dejected Lars declines to attend the boat party thrown for all the finalists and sits on the dock as Sigrit tries to console him. Suddenly, the boat explodes, killing everyone on board and leaving Fire Saga as the only surviving contestants and thus final winners by default, much to the disappointment of the participation committee.
Do you know this joke?
The lyrics of the song go:. I saw a whimbrel in the bay to the south, a plover sings in the dry grassland, cheep cheep cheep cheep, spring is surely here again. The song references the common folk belief that the migratory European golden plover brings spring with it; we still have newspaper headlines when the first plover is spotted or heard every spring. I think this YouTube video is the same recording the movie uses, only you can hear all of it properly! These scenes feature Icelandic extras and some actual spoken Icelandic, with English subtitles.
But there is something beloved about this wacky, crazy and often quite campy show, and Ferrell, who learned about the contest from his Swedish wife, wanted the movie to be not only a comedy, but a love letter. Director David Dobkin called on one of the top pop songwriters on the planet, Savan Kotecha, to serve as the Executive Music Producer and to guide each song to pop perfection. Kotecha has written for all the biggest names in popular music, including The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, Ellie Goulding, Usher and Katy Perry, and was the perfect person to corral a group of songwriters to create original songs that sound like they could actually be performed in the Eurovision extravaganza. But it is the one song that breaks from the upbeat pop dance track that has gotten the most attention. I went to Sweden for the first time when I was 19 or You just have to not take it so seriously and just have fun with it. This crazy thing, Eurovision. Fat Max Gsus: Yeah, it was an obvious thing that happens every year. The children especially love this contest in Sweden, so, every year in school, around the time of Melodifestivalen and Eurovision, the kids are running around on their breaks, singing those songs.
