Speed check sr 71
I heard a Cessna ask for a readout of its ground speed. Moments later,a Twin Beech required the same. It was at that precise moment I realized Walt and I had become a real crew, for we were both thinking in unison. The SR71 requested flight level
So it comes as no surprise if, thanks to its astonishing flight characteristics, the aircraft has set numerous speed and altitude records throughout its career. People often asked us if, because of this fact, it was fun to fly the jet. Fun would not be the first word I would use to describe flying this plane—intense, maybe, even cerebral. We were monitoring various radio transmissions from other aircraft as we entered Los Angeles airspace. I heard a Cessna ask for a readout of its ground speed. As I was thinking to myself how ripe a situation this was, I heard a familiar click of a radio transmission coming from my back-seater.

I never tire of that story. Growing up in an aviation family, I have heard endless cool stories but few so cool. One of my favorites was when my grandfather was flying when the F15 was in early flight development. The skies were much less busy, and there was a bit less formality. The two pilots were close enough to exchange waves, and moments later the F15 rocketed away. Most likely that day, the F15 was the fastest thing in the air for several hundred miles. The SR's actual top speed was classified, and the 'official' top speed was faster than anything else in production. At several points growing up someone would come up with a new plane that encroached on the SR's speed record. Then a couple weeks later there would be an announcement about the SR setting a new top speed. I suspect someone in Intelligence had to decide that being officially the fastest was important, but exactly how fast being a secret made the plane and pilot a little bit safer.
But in terms of pure possibility, there's wide open possibilities.

I don't know of any ludicrous speeding tickets so I can't participate in today's QOTD, but it did remind me of my favorite SR story.
The SR was developed as a black project from the Lockheed A reconnaissance aircraft during the s by Lockheed's Skunk Works division. American aerospace engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the aircraft's innovative concepts. Initially, a bomber variant of the A was requested by Curtis LeMay , before the program was focused solely on reconnaissance. The SR was longer and heavier than the A, allowing it to hold more fuel as well as a two-seat cockpit. NASA was the final operator of the Blackbird, using it as a research platform; it was retired again in Mission equipment for the plane's aerial reconnaissance role included signals intelligence sensors, side looking airborne radar , and a camera. A total of 32 aircraft were built; 12 were lost in accidents with none lost to enemy action.

You sir, have clearly never met us special forces. JustLurking 9 months ago root parent prev next [—] Making some money doesn't mean it was necessarily profitable enough to be worth flying. The upthread-linked Reddit debunk [0] is A SR71 would've been on a different frequency to both other planes; B ATC computers at the time were capped at knots; C SR71s' speeds were classified, no way the crew would've asked or ATC responded with it. Returning my attention inward, I glance first at the miles counter telling me how many more to go, until we can start our turn. I heard a Cessna ask for a readout of its ground speed. Take it as you will. SkyMarshal 9 months ago root parent next [—] Yeah, heat expansion made it airtight at Mach 3, but sitting on a runway with its parts contracted back to normal dimensions, it had leaks. It's much stronger than aluminium. And similarly the CIT limit can be estimated from published data about the engine plus knowledge of the limits of the materials used when it was designed.
Brian Shul 8 February — 20 May was an American pilot and photographer. He was so badly burned that he was given next to no chance to live.
I like the effect that the story has had, but I dislike the idea that it might have been an exaggeration. Farmer: "Slow? There he was, with no really good view of the incredible sights before us, tasked with monitoring four different radios. You may also like. Doesn't Brian Shul talk about the time Regan had them fly figure 8s over some foreign city during negotiations just to remind them with the sonic booms that we can touch them? I guess the point is you can make an estimate of the CIT based on the geometry of the plane, and the speed and altitude it's traveling at. Fighter plane mafia aside, I have no trouble believing that that money is going nowhere useful. Yes, except I don't think developers have built tramlines anywhere but the US and also the expansion to the suburbs didn't quite happen that way. The DoD has had screwed up accounting systems for decades because Congress never appropriated funding to fix them. Blake Scholl and Boom Supersonic are trying to make that possible again.
