Perhaps by that time sufficient evidence will have been gathered to explain just why a movie assembled by a group of mostly first-rate talents wound up such a soggy, slushy mess. I myself cannot quite figure it out. The movie begins with what turns out to be a flashback. The scene is shot with what appears to be a lilac petal dangling in front of the lens. In a large cabin in a snow-covered field, a man in a police car visits a young boy and his mother. And there the man administers a test to the boy, slapping the mother every time the kid gets a question wrong. Things go from bad to worse, and eventually a Volvo sinks into a lake, and a kid is left homeless.

Harry Hole probably should have suspected the killer in The Snowman was someone close to him, and the ending clears up a lot of the mystery surrounding the culprit. The film follows Harry working with Katrine Bratt to solve the mystery of a killer murdering women and leaving a snowman behind. Harry works tirelessly to solve the case, considering many suspects along the way but not getting to the bottom of the murders until the end of the film. Unfortunately, The Snowman was not met with praise like the novel was despite being highly anticipated among fans. The film was set amid a snowy landscape, adding the theme of the snowman killings. The Snowman was shot around Norway, mostly in Oslo, showcasing the city's beautiful snowy mountains. Throughout the film, Harry also copes with his split from Rakel, for whom he seemingly still has feelings. Harry deals with alcoholism, but his passion for solving the case gets him back on track in his life.
