Basically there's something called an SPD Serial Presence Detect in your memory's programmable ROM that stores information on the performance capability of the memory, such as speed and timings. Each profile is a preconfigured, overclocked setting for your computer. It's a little more complex than this, but basically it overclocks your memory for you. The settings stored in the memory are likely NOT the ideal settings for your computer. Not because Corsair and nVidia are evil, but because each computer system is different and needs the settings tweaked for true stability and greater performance.
